Shallow water Lake Trout fishing package- May 10-17 at Gunflint Lodge

Gunflint is one of Minnesota's best native lake trout lakes.

When the first fishermen came to the area they found Gunflint Lake abounding with native lake trout. They had dark skin with red accents edging their fins, so they called them land-locked salmon.

They noticed the appearance and taste of these fish was quite different from the lake trout of Lake Superior due to their different diet.

Fast forward many years from these early fishermen. One year some spring fishermen accidentally introduced smelt to Gunflint Lake by using them as fishing bait. Some of their fertilized eggs got things started.

For once, a people-generated accident didn't screw things up! The smelt provide the lake trout with an abundance of additional feed. They're growing bigger and faster than ever.

In May and early June the lake trout are feeding in shallow water. Many are taken by trolling spinners or Rapalas. They usually run from 3 to 10 pounds, and love to put up a good fight before you get them in the boat.

They're found along our rocky shores of Gunflint Lake. Most of our guests can tie into them without needing the services of a guide.

On the other hand, guides provide extra benefits. They can get you on the fish faster. And they can cook up your fish for lunch right there on the shore. They also do all the boat chores of hooking up your lures, putting on the bait and cleaning your fish.

This Shallow Water Lake Trout Fishing Package includes: three nights accommodations in a lakeside fireplace cabin, all meals (packed lunches if you want to be out all day while fishing), boat, 20hp electric-start motor, all your gas, minnows, fish filleting and freezing.
