On an uninhabited barrier island, just off the coast of North Carolina, live wild horses. They roam the dunes and marshes and swim in the small channels between the island and the nearby tidal flats, which ebb-out on the low tides and disappear again with the next high tide. Feel their freedom on the white sandy beaches of the Outer Bank islands, on the shores of its famous coast, and in the summer sun-tinted air at your Rose’s Vacation Rental on Harker’s Island.

Island
Nature
Take a trip by passenger ferry to Cape Lookout and to Shackelford Banks’ lighthouse and wild ponies. Go swimming at the county public water access near the island side of the bridge, or try your paddle at kayaking, sailing, para-sailing, and windsurfing! For those bound by land, try the nature trails at Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and adjacent national Park Service.
The Local Yokel Ferry will drop you off on Shackleford to see and photograph the famous wild horses of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It is just a short walk from the soundside over to the ocean. Standing atop the dunes, you may be able to spot nearby small herds.
