The Croff House Bed & Breakfast has a rich history that dates all the way back to the early 1600s when Hudson, New York was originally discovered. On September 27, 1609, Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, ran aground on an alluvial island and established Hudson. Here, there was an area known as Willard Place, named after the original proprietor Henry A. Willard of Willard's Hotel in D.C. Willard Place was eventually transformed into a private, gated community in 1872 and by 1875, Herman Vedder Esselstyn and his wife Margaret, two of Hudson's leading society figures, built a three-story house a 5 Willard Place, inspired by Second Empire style. This is the basis of The Croff House today. In 1939, a fire burned down the third floor and it has since not been rebuilt; instead the lower two floors continue to remain and host travelers from around the country. The inn's history continues on from there; in 1989, actress Meg Mundy bought the home and renovated it during her stay, and later in 2008, Duncan Calhoun and Russell Gibson, owners of 4 Willard Place, purchased the home. They spent seven months renovating the property and are the ones responsible for turning 5 Willard Place into The Croff House, honoring the house's original architect G.B. Croff!
