The inn was built as a private residence in 1860 by merchant sea captain, Melville Walker. In 1924, Senator Wickes of New York owned the property before selling it to the Eldridge's, who turned it into a guest house and gave it its current name. The Maine Stay Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
