The scenic town of Big Sky, Montana rests high in the Gallatin National Forest, where Lone Mountain, at 11,166 feet, towers over the community. The late newscaster, Chet Huntley purchased much of what is now known as Big Sky Mountain and Meadow Villages in the late 1960’s and dreamed of developing one of Montana’s first alpine ski areas. Development of the alpine area and the residential villages began in the early 1970s and the mountain first opened for skiing in December 1973. These days, you will find plenty of world-class skiing spread across three interconnected mountains with over 5,512 acres of outdoor playground that includes 220 trails and 400 inches of snow annually. However, winter is not the only time of year to enjoy a Big Sky getaway. During the summer months you will enjoy plenty of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding in the Rockies. Or, try whitewater rafting and fishing in the nearby alpine lakes and rivers.
