Tap Into This Great North Carolina Destination at the Tryon Beer Fest

Located on the first rise of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Tyron’s mountain vistas, outdoor activities, and culinary scene make it the ideal location to launch a North Carolina adventure. Travelers will find themselves enamored with the downtown area's unique restaurants, art galleries, and community events . Whether you’re watching a horse show at the Tryon Equestrian Center or taking photos of the 90-foot waterfall at Pearson’s Falls, the town has something for everyone.

Tryon Beer Fest has been the primary Oktoberfest event in the Tryon area since it began six years ago, and it will take place November 4th at the Tryon Depot Plaza. This year’s event will feature samples of more than 60 beers and ciders from regional producers including Sierra Nevada, Wicked Weed Brewing, and Green Man Brewery. Attendees will also have the opportunity to play a variety of fun yard games like stein hoisting and giant Jenga. Regional musicians such as Aaron Burdett and ScOOt Pittman will perform live throughout the event. From traditional German foods like sauerkraut and brats to favorite event foods like donut holes and hot pretzels, the Fest has cuisine for everyone. Patrons can also purchase roasted oysters by the bucket or oyster shooters at the onsite oyster roast. Proceeds from the event will go to a variety of downtown projects like community events and beautifying the downtown area. We interviewed Jamie Carpenter, Executive Director of the Tryon Downtown Development Association, to learn more about this celebration of beer.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

JC: Tryon Beer Fest was started six years ago by several local business owners and craft beer fans. La Bouteille (now named the Tryon Bottle) had recently opened, and they wanted to bring more excitement for craft beer in Tryon.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw?

JC: We draw about 600 or more people each year, and cap tickets at 1000 to keep the festival intimate with short lines.

RAL: What demographic does your event attract? Children? Families? Couples?

JC: It's a 21+ event, so adults only, however, we have a wide age range of beer fans who come to the festival.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

JC: We have a popular oyster roast in addition to our other activities. Attendees can purchase oysters by the bucket and oyster shooters. The festival overlooks beautiful downtown Tryon at our peak leaf season, and you couldn't ask for a better location.

RAL: Take me through a day at the event.

JC: We have 60+ craft beers to sample, as well as cider and wine. There will also be a game area with an annual favorite game, "Hoppy Hammer" named after our event mascot "Hoppy" who is the beer-loving brother of our town mascot, Morris the Horse. It's a blast, and everyone enjoys it. We also have cornhole, giant Jenga, and other fun games to keep folks busy.

RAL: Will there be any guest appearances?

JC: Our musical guests include Aaron Burdett and ScOOT Pittman. Both bands bring excellent rock music and tons of fun.

RAL: What dining options will attendees encounter?

JC: Food is available for purchase from our food vendors. We have BBQ, desserts, pretzels, vegetarian fare, traditional German foods, and more.

RAL: Tell us about the overall atmosphere?

JC: The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Few places compare to the first rise of beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains during peak leaf season.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

JC: Yes, our food vendors are all local, and attendees can come and go to the festival as they please. It's the perfect opportunity to explore Downtown Tryon.

RAL: Does the event support a particular cause in the community?

JC: Funding for this event goes toward downtown projects, specifically free events, beautification, and historic preservation. We also partner with the Foothills Humane Society for volunteers and donate their service.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

JC: Everyone who comes to Tryon Beer Fest has a great time. Avoid long lines and enjoy your friends and family at this beer festival. Also, make a few new friends.
