A Celebration of Music and Beer that Everyone Can Dig

Originating as a railway depot and hub in the 1870’s, Clayton has grown into a year-round destination complete with community events, a fast-growing art scene, and a variety of outdoor activities. Those in search of libations and unique surroundings will instantly fall in love with First Street Tavern and Revival 1869. The Clayton Center’s variety of art projects and concerts by national performers are a must for any traveler interested in arts and entertainment.

The Shindig has been a go-to event in the Clayton community for the past seven years, and it will take place November 4 in Historic Downtown Clayton. This year’s event will include at least nine bands playing music on two stages including nationally known acts such as The Black Lillies, Yarn, and Dangermuffin. Attendees over 21 can sample a variety of beers from Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits Company, Deep River Brewing Company, and more. Featuring a variety of chicken wings, games, and giveaways, The Zaxby’s Chicken Wing Contest is a great spot for hungry patrons. Anyone with an impressive beard or mustache should register for the Beard Competition hosted by Smoky Mountain Beard Company. Anyone looking for an enhanced Shindig experience should purchase VIP tickets, which offer  catered food, unlimited beer samples, and access to an exclusive VIP area. We got the chance to interview Dave Brown, a representative for the event to learn more about this unique community celebration.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

DB: We are in our 6th year, what started as a cornhole tournament in a bar parking lot seven years ago has now turned into a music festival.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw?

DB: Each year the attendance has varied. We've had rain for the last four years, but all in all, we pull well over 1,000 attendees annually.

RAL: What demographic does your event attract? Children? Families? Couples?

DB: Yes to all!  If you like music or beer, this is your event! We have something for everyone!

RAL: Take me through the activities of a day at the event.

DB: Attendees can expect music, music, and more music. Plus, we have a variety of street vendors as well as food trucks.

RAL: Will there be any guest appearances?

DB: We have nine bands on two stages, and most of the groups are national touring acts.

RAL: What will attendees find for dining options?

DB: We have some great food trucks, and Zaxby's is catering the event for us!

RAL: Tell us about the overall atmosphere?

DB: Picture a three-day music festival crammed into one wonderful day!

RAL: What can an attendee expect to find for local lodging?

DB: You can always stay at the Morning Glory Inn for a unique experience! Also, the Country Inn and Suites by Carlson is our partner hotel, and offers excellent accommodations!

RAL: Are there any lodging specials that are set up for the event?

DB: Yes, the Country Suite by Carlson is offering a huge discount!

RAL: What does this event mean to the community?

DB: The event is an excellent opportunity for the community to gather and have a great time. Plus, the proceeds go to programs that serve the community.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

DB: Of course! We have people traveling from three states away to attend this year!

RAL: Does the event support a particular cause in the community?

DB: A good portion of the proceeds will go to the Michael Foy Smith Scholarship fund, that is a scholarship that goes to the local students to help them with college expenses.  Also, we use the money from the event to get toys for kids at Christmas as well as "adopting" a few families that are in need.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

DB: Our event features some of the best Americana music acts touring today. It's an intimate environment where you can reach out and touch them. Also, the VIP experience (sponsored by Social House Vodka) is going to be something to remember.  It's catered and has a full bar. Plus patrons can have unlimited beer samples for three hours with purchase of a VIP ticket.
