TEXAS! Outdoor Musical

If you're looking for a unique outdoor music entertainment extravaganza then the TEXAS Outdoor Musical is for you. For 50 years the dedicated actors and signers have brought electricity to the calm Canyon, Texas evenings. In June through August, on Tuesday thru Sunday nights, you can catch this spectacle that is set against the breathtaking cliffs of the Duro Canyon State Park. When the Texas flag is proudly raised on a cliff that sits 600 feet above the stage, the show springs to action. Over 60 dancers, singers and performers bring life to the natural amphitheater that is cut into the bedrock. Come and join the 75,000 people from around the world that come to Canyon to partake in the spectacle that is TEXAS. This is a perfect event to bring the family, friends, group or a date. They offer meals and a range of packages to accommodate groups and help you have the best experience possible. I got the opportunity to talk to Lindsey Miller the sales and marketing manager, to see what the TEXAS Outdoor Musical is all about.

TS: What makes this event unique?

LM: TEXAS is history making history. For 50 years now, 100 very talented actors, singers, dancers, technician and hospitality crew come together to tell the story of the late 1800 settlers of the Texas Panhandle, from struggles to triumphs. With spellbinding song, dance, and special lighting and fire effects, TEXAS will have you at the edge of your seat. The Beautiful Palo Duro Canyon sets the scene and makes for one glorious backdrop.

TS: Take me through a typical day at the event?

LM: Guests are allowed to enter the park after 4pm for free with their TEXAS tickets. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is second largest canyon in the nation, and is one of our nation’s most magnificent natural attractions.

The box office in the Amphitheatre opens at 6pm nightly; TEXAS runs every night except for Monday nights, early June – Mid August. There is a delicious chuck wagon BBQ dinner served before the show on our covered patio from 6-8pm, catered by Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner of Canyon, and includes three meat BBQ, sides, dessert and drinks!

There is plenty of pre-show entertainment to enjoy including live music by TEXAS cast members, along with TEXAS line dance lessons for the kids, and a Quanah Parker interpretive by Benny Tahmahkera Jr., a Quanah Parker decedent. Or you can always stop by the TEXAS gift shop to cool off and grab some fabulous souvenirs!

Seating in the Amphitheatre begins about 8pm, and the show start as the sun sets over the Canyon wall about 8:30pm as a lone horseman, carrying the flag of the great state of Texas, appears atop a 600 foot cliff, signaling the beginning of the most spectacular outdoor musical drama in the world. TEXAS is approximately two hours long with a 15 minute intermission and a remarkable Grand Finale to cap off the show with fireworks that light up the canyon walls and the beautiful dancing waters of TEXAS! You are usually out of the Amphitheatre for a chance to meet the ever so talented cast by 10:30pm and headed out of the Canyon by 11pm.
