Chatty Holiday: Tennessee’s Leading Holiday Shopping Experience

Chattanooga, Tennessee’s official nickname is the Scenic City, but this Southern destination has more to offer than beautiful views. The city is the 4th largest in the state with over 175,000 residents, and visitors will find an abundance of historic sites, family attractions, restaurants, live entertainment venues, and more. From taking a romantic walk on the Riverfront to a fun-filled day at one of the city's events, Chattanooga has something for everyone.

Chatty Holiday is one of the top holiday shopping events in the Southeast United States, and it takes place at the Granfalloon in downtown Chattanooga. Patrons have a chance to browse and purchase a multitude of items from top vendors in the Southeast United States. From baked goods for dogs to custom made soaps, everyone will find something at Chatty Holiday. The event is ideal for families, with its festive and friendly atmosphere. Host Indie South puts on shows that bring together artists and their supporters in a fun and interactive environment. We got the opportunity to interview Serra Jaggar, Founder and Coordinator of Indie South, to talk about this unique holiday shopping event.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

SJ: The event has been running since 2006.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw?

SJ: We see anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 people at our largest events, and about half that at the smaller events.

RAL: What is the typical demographic makeup of the event? Children? Families? Couples?

SJ: Typically we encounter families, couples, and millennials. We tend to draw a diverse mix of people who believe in supporting small business and want to see what is fresh and new from emerging designers.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

SJ: Indie South is unique for its art curation and promoting camaraderie.  We draw together quality makers and vintage collectors in a relaxed atmosphere that gives people a chance to get to know the artists. It's not just about commerce, it's about community.

RAL: What is the overall environment like?

SJ: It's a relaxed, laid-back, and fun atmosphere that encourages friendship.

RAL: What can an attendee expect to find for local lodging?

SJ: Chattanooga has a wide variety of lodging options. Check the Chattanooga Tennessee Tourism website for more information.

RAL: What does this event mean to the community?

SJ: This event is a chance to bring people together around creative pursuits, to connect makers with their audience, and to foster a sense of community across boundaries.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

SJ: Yes, we generate tens of thousands of dollars annually from visitors who support our artists and from our artists buying gas, food, and lodging while participating in our events.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

SJ: We often partner with local organizations we support like Project Safe and Girls Rock.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

SJ: Indie South is the perfect event to get inspired and connect with the creative community of the Southeast. It's a great way to see what is happening locally and regionally in the arts scene. It opens the conversation about why the arts are such an important part of our culture.
