While Toronto’s younger set may be tempted to write off our No. 1 pick as their granddaddy’s hotel, we’d be the first in line to urge them to reconsider. Despite its stately exterior and landmark past, the Fairmont Royal York’s sophisticated yet modern luxury is equally enticing to travelers of all ages.

The Fairmont Royal York has maintained the timeless elegance and appeal of its early days, while somehow staying abreast of its more contemporary competition. We’re not sure how this Toronto luxury hotel mastered such an unheard of feat – and with seeming ease, to boot – but we’re sure glad they have. Regardless of age, those with more refined tastes will find much to be thankful for on the Fairmont’s signature Gold Floor. From complimentary cocktails and canapés to complimentary breakfast, every whim will be catered to on your Ontario luxury vacation. With overstuffed armchairs and dusty classics encased in floor-to-ceiling wood panels, the Fairmont’s Library Bar lives up to its name. But even this sophisticated space takes on a playful twist with the addition of Lounging in the Dark events each Saturday night, when the lights are dimmed, the candles are lit and the acoustic guitars are brought in for a social occasion as eco-friendly as it is fun. Besides, this Toronto bar’s martinis – voted the city’s best for four consecutive years – are equally tasty both in and out of sight!

Address

100 Front St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5J 1E3

Fun facts

Fairmont Royal York’s expertly mixed cocktails have earned the hotel a ranking on Toronto Life magazine's best martinis list for four years running.

Our No. 3 pick is a relative newcomer on the Toronto luxury hotel scene. Brimming with bohemian flair, this Ontario boutique hotel is clearly the odd man out – but in a really, really good way. If you’ve been searching for the latest “it” spot for everything from sculpture to sashimi, the Drake Hotel is most assuredly your destination!

This uber-trendy luxury hotel is a worthy tribute to Toronto’s reputation for stylish design. The Drake also doubles as living proof of the talented artistic community it proudly calls home. This Ontario city is most famous for its international film festivals, but its West Queen West Art and Design District also serves as a breeding ground for creative minds of every bent, including talented photographers and artists on the brink of making it big. And rising up from its center is the Drake Hotel, where contemporary décor and culture-infused objet d’art peacefully coexist within the same style-studded walls. The Drake Hotel's art is truly inspired, but man cannot live on Monets and Renoirs alone. When your tummy starts to rumble, the Raw Bar is happy to satisfy it with sashimi delights and shucked oysters plucked from the sea. And when you’ve had your fill of both art and cuisine, the Drake Hotel’s playfully-named Crash Pad suites beckon with exposed brick walls and paintings so fresh we were scared to touch them!

Our No. 4 pick takes its name from a location poised at the intersections of Toronto’s most famed avenues, Yorkville and Hazelton. But the Hazelton Hotel’s upscale address isn’t the only exclusive perk to its name. From private screening rooms to internationally-acclaimed interior design, this Toronto luxury hotel is a master at exceeding expectations.

Every inch of this urban retreat is swathed in ultra-luxe leathers, satins and suedes, while indulgent amenities like oversized plasma TVs and Italian linens are luxuries featured in even the most standard of Hazelton Hotel suites. Overcome with gratitude, we rushed to the lobby to offer up our thanks to the hotel’s staff, who promptly informed us that the real genius behind this Toronto hotel’s grandeur was none other than international design firm YabuPushelberg. The Hazelton Hotel offers its guests a list of 18 reasons to stay among its incomparable style and splendor, but we only needed one: the en-suite baths. Dressing rooms hand-carved from exotic hardwoods, floors tiled in shimmering granite slabs and the deepest of soaking tubs topped with rainfall showers – pinch us, because we’ve surely died and gone to interior design heaven. If ever a Toronto hotel was tailor-made for clandestine meetings and late-night rendezvous, the Hazelton Hotel would be just the destination!

You’d never guess the distinguished façade of our No. 6 pick housed one of Toronto’s finest luxury hotels. With its stately brick exterior, Windsor Arms Hotel gives the air of an Ivy League university, while its more intimate scale makes this Toronto boutique hotel perfectly suited to your big city rendezvous.

Our No. 6 pick’s striking resemblance to the University of Toronto is no coincidence. After all, this acclaimed institution’s Victorian architecture was just one inspiration after which hotelier and founder William Arthur Price modeled his luxury hotel residence. If a discreet and romantic escape among this Ontario city’s urban sprawl is what you came for, the Windsor Adams Hotel won’t disappoint. Renovated from top to bottom in traditional 1920s style, the hotel’s nostalgic touches (think fireplaces and limestone walls) are a striking complement to its otherwise contemporary décor. And every luxury suite comes with a nifty feature: around-the-clock butlers at your beck and call. From sunrise to sunset, all your culinary wishes come true inside Windsor Arms Hotel’s impeccable dining experiences. Gorgeous. Graceful. Grandiose. While the “G” emblazoned across our No. 7 pick could easily stand for any – or all – of the above, its signature initial is actually an abbreviated version of Hôtel Le Germain. Here in the heart of Toronto’s financial district, things can get a little out of hand. From greedy stock brokers counting their coin to society elite eager to spend their riches, it’s easy to get swept away in the quest for cash. Where others border on crass, our No. 8 pick is a welcome respite from the money-hungry crowds.

If your tastes err more towards class, Le Royal Méridien King Edward is your Toronto luxury hotel of choice. With a name that practically promises the royal treatment – and rolls off the tongue the way only French can – even its name oozes sophistication. For nearly a century, this historic accommodation has offered a decidedly elegant way to stay for businessmen and discerning travelers alike. From red carpeted steps that lead to a lobby brimming with Old World appeal to the elegant columns that frame its entrance, Le Royal Méridien King Edward adds turn of the century charm to every Canadian vacation. More Zen-like sanctuary than downtown Toronto hotel, this serene inner city retreat promises to stir your soul, restore peace of mind and breathe new life into your world-weary soul. With a beautiful blend of Western sophistication and Eastern influences, Cosmopolitan Toronto Centre Hotel captured our hearts – er, chakras.

We’d normally scoff at such flighty notions as the Cosmopolitan Toronto’s dedication to Feng Shui-ing each of its guestrooms and suites. But one step inside and we swear the tension simply melted away. Maybe it was the natural gemstone fountain, designed by what the hotel calls its “energy consultant” and strategically placed at the energy center of your Cosmopolitan Toronto suite. Then again, it could have been the hotel’s Lifestyle Team, a dedicated collection of staff who happily takes on even the most mundane of tasks, from adding a few pieces of Toronto couture to your already extensive collection to trotting your pampered pooch around the block. And if pampering is on your itinerary, Toronto’s only five-star spa – Shizen Spa – is conveniently located on site! Whether this Toronto luxury hotel takes its upscale moniker from sophisticated world travelers or fruit-infused elixirs of the same name is of little consequence. Both imply luxury, class and inimitable style, which the Cosmopolitan Toronto Centre Hotel has in spades.

Love the Cosmopolitan Toronto? You’ll adore its sister property, the Pantages Hotel Toronto.
