We have all dreamt of the perfect Caribbean vacation – the way it should be. It’s just a matter of finding it that sometimes eludes us. Not when you stay at our No. 2 St. Thomas resort, however! Come stay and play the true Caribbean way at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort!

We don’t necessarily mean you are going to start saying “mon” instead of “man” at the end of every sentence, but we do mean that at Bolongo, your experience is entirely focused on sand and sun. Located on the 1000-ft. palm-lined St. Thomas beach, you are steps away from the Caribbean Sea shore in your Bolongo oceanfront room. And the pool’s water is just as crystal blue as the island sea and sky. But what really got us excited was the attention paid to our stomachs – not in a bikini contest, but in the kitchen! Bolongo is the only all-inclusive resort to offer lobster, all-you-can-eat snow crab and filet mignon without a surcharge. As much as you may want to stay in that hammock, Bolongo encourages diving in – literally and figuratively. Kayak, paddleboat, try an aqua tri-cycle or take a SCUBA lesson in the pool!

Our No. 3 pick specializes in going beyond the ordinary. The sun is not just yellow, it’s a sunflower gold. The clouds are not just fluffy, they are gossamer. The water is not just blue, it’s a brilliant sapphire. And so, Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina takes its place in the ranks of exceptional beach resorts.

Sapphire Beach Resort rests on its own beach, which is more than half a mile long, complete with sun, sand, shore and shade. Drop your anchor in the 67-slip Sapphire Marina and watch the gentle waves rise and fall from your Yacht Harbor View Suite. Our favorite view, however, was from Sapphire’s multi-level cascading pool. From these sapphire waters, a sweeping vista of the Caribbean seascape and some of the other surrounding islands is visible. Pretend with the kids that you are swimming to the next island shore or stay on St. Thomas with a cool beverage in hand. If you must venture off the beach, then the summit of St. Peter Mountain is our suggestion – and not just for the banana daiquiris you can reward yourself with. Or, reward yourself simply by returning to Sapphire’s beach!

Average temperature

High 82 degrees F, low 78 degrees F.

Despite our No. 5 pick’s name, there is no way we are keeping quiet about this resort. Secret Harbour may have successfully slipped into the quiet East End of St. Thomas Island, but it did not slip by us unnoticed.

Sequestered in a cove and surrounded by palm trees, the water stays consistently calm. This makes Secret Harbour’s shore ideal for water sports like snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Since the water is relatively shallow (only about 45 ft. deep), divers receive a significant amount of bottom time. Spot a stingray, sergeant major, grunts or yellowtail snappers! The crescent shaped beach is especially romantic. Walk hand-in-hand in this intimate setting beneath the crescent moon and rekindle that burning flame. Secret Harbour also understands that you like to be active, as well as relax, on vacation. The three all-weather tennis courts, a fitness center and an outdoor freshwater pool are there for leisure or to keep your workout schedule. But you are on vacation, after all, so end your day with an invigorating massage from Secret Harbour’s onsite professional massage therapist.

In a crop of emerald green palm treetops, a rustic red roof peeks out and then gives way to 15 acres of private Caribbean beachfront property with white sand and aquamarine lounge chairs to match the Caribbean Sea in the resort’s back-yard. Impressed? We were!

Bluebeard’s Beach Club lets you strike a balance between being a beach bum and an active islander. You never have to leave the acres of sand, intensely blue water or the hammock from which you stare up at the equally intensely-blue sky. Or, you can get up and play a game of shuffleboard, ride the wind parasailing or challenge your family and friends to a game of water or sand volleyball. Whichever you choose, Bluebeard encourages both. The contrast of relaxation and activity continues inside the resort as well. Sit at the swim-up bar in the outdoor free form pool or play video games and billiards on site. But what we recommend for everyone is a Bluebeard suite or condo, accented with coral and sand colors and a gorgeous view of the St. Thomas coastline from the balcony.

Fun facts

Bluebeard is a character in a French fairytale by Charles Perrault involving a wealthy aristocrat, Bluebeard, whose wives mysteriously disappear. When he marries a neighbor’s daughter and she unlocks a forbidden room in his chateau, she is in danger of disappearing the same way as the wives before her.

Getting there

Cyril E. King International Airport is the closest airport to Bluebeard’s Beach Club. From the airport, take Route 30 East past the waterfront. Turn right at Mandela Circle. Then, at the top of the hill, turn left to continue on Route 30. Travel approximately another mile and make a right turn at Bluebeard’s Beach Club sign.

We’re sure you always imagined it would be St. Peter opening the pearly gates for you, but we have found that it is actually St. Thomas that is the doorway to paradise. Our No. 10 St. Thomas Island resort, Elysian Beach Resort, only adds to the already celestial surroundings.

Encompassed by hills covered in a blanket of palm trees, Elysian has 67 villas with balconies that look out on the expansive, blue Caribbean Sea and Elysian’s yacht-filled cove. We’ve heard that things run in the family, which is another reason Elysian is a prime St. Thomas Island vacation destination – it is the sister property of our No. 7 pick, Bluebeard’s Beach Club. Holding to the same standards of relaxing luxury and quality entertainment, Elysian has a unique free form pool, day spa, marina, outdoor hot tub and more to amuse! After a rigorous game of tennis or basketball, or a relaxing swim in the pool or Caribbean Sea, Elysian has two fine dining options to satisfy the appetite you’ve worked up. Crash! You ram your car into your kid’s car. No, this isn’t an extreme case of familial road rage. This is you and your family riding water bumper boats at our family-friendly St. Thomas vacation resort, Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa.

Our No. 8 resort holds two key elements to a successful St. Thomas Island getaway in its title: sugar and spa.
