We love this concept – a traditional Colorado guest ranch with horseback riding and rustic appeal, yet featuring luxurious accommodations and gourmet cuisine. And Vista Verde Ranch turns the traditional friendly, down-to-earth dude ranch charm into a complete Steamboat Springs adventure getaway.

Some of the adventure comes from the location – places like Wapiti Mountain, Hole-in-the-Wall Canyon and Hinman Lake are along the horseback trails. Some of it comes from the sheer range of activities. Vista Verde Ranch provides guided trips for rafting, biking, hiking, rock climbing and even culinary adventures – plus special horseback and adventure programs for kids and teens. All of it is showcased from truly beautiful accommodations that are straight from a Western movie on the outside and luxurious on the inside. That includes nine cabins with up to three bedrooms, plus three elegant Steamboat Springs lodge rooms. All have an exhilarating twist of Old West and antique styles that add up to modern guest ranch luxury.

Highlights

The chef at Vista Verde ranch provides ever-changing programs for cooking classes and wine tasting, a fresh – and very popular – Vista Verde Ranch adventure.

Getting there

From Denver, CO, travel west on I-70 to Silverthorne. Turn right and drive north on Highway 9 to Kremmling. In Kremmling, turn left and northwest on Highway 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass to Steamboat Springs. Drive past the ski area and through town to the west side of Steamboat on Highway 40. Turn right (north) on County Road 129. Follow CR 129 north about 18 miles. Just past Clark you will cross the Elk River. Immediately after, turn right onto Seedhouse Road (aka County Road 64). Follow Seedhouse Road about five miles until you see the Vista Verde sign on the left-hand side of the road. Take a left into the driveway.

We have to say that Steamboat Springs is beautiful any time of year. That might be an understatement, and to view this Colorado wonderland from Sheraton Steamboat Resort it definitely is. Here’s a place that celebrates the outdoors as equally as it does its interior beauty.

This splendid tower of rooms and amenities manages to be grand and unassuming at the same time, what with the blissful Yampa Valley as a backdrop. And it doesn’t hurt that the gorgeous par 72 course at the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club adorns the premises, or that it’s so close to the Steamboat Ski area that you can walk to the Silver Bullet Gondola. Sheraton Steamboat Resort is so much more than even this – it’s really an adventure resort, cleverly disguised as a luxury Steamboat Springs hotel. By luxury, we mean the kind you discover after a $20 million renovation. Each 408-sq.-ft. hotel room has been completely redesigned, and the one- and two-bedroom Village Inn condominiums on the top floors are privately owned, fully-furnished and ready for a Steamboat getaway you’ll never forget. This goes along with the hotel’s valet services, the espresso café, the rooftop hot tubs…it’s simply paradise, indoors and out.

We’re certainly discriminating when it comes to Steamboat Springs vacations, but we do look everywhere for the finest experiences. Hence the Hampton Inn and Suites, in our No. 8 spot, which we found combines the simple, solid promises of a value hotel plus its own brand of resort style and luxury.

Sure, you’ll get the basics here – any of 68 comfortable rooms or spacious suites, many with refrigerators and microwaves. A host of “complimentaries” includes cable TV, movie channel and high-speed Internet in each room. There’s a swimming pool, an exercise room and a business center. And then there are the extras: things like wet bars, and the fact that there are three whirlpools here for those nights after skiing – the ski area is a mile away – golfing, shopping in downtown Steamboat Springs or other Steamboat adventures. Rounding it out is the onsite video arcade, plus a convenience store for last-minute needs. Complimentary breakfast and beverage areas are great for starting and refreshing your days. The Hampton Inn and Suites may be a familiar brand, but in Steamboat Springs it becomes something more – it’s just what you need for any Steamboat getaway.

The Steamboat Hotel offers a lodging concept as simple and elegant as its name. Yet to say it’s a “limited service hotel” doesn’t quite do it justice. It has everything you need for a Steamboat getaway, all housed in a 60-room hotel that looks and feels every bit like a historic Steamboat lodge.

That’s to say nothing of the seasonal outdoor swimming pool and the near-mandatory year-round outdoor hot tub. But the best part of your Steamboat Hotel experience is its location: just steps from the Yampa Core River Trail and moments to the Yampa River itself, it presents the finest of Steamboat Springs fishing, hiking and outdoor adventure. The Steamboat Hotel is also two miles from the Steamboat Ski area and one mile from historic downtown Steamboat Springs, so you can take your pick as far as a more “traditional” Steamboat getaway. No matter what your reason for visiting, you know what you’ll get here: all the comforts you’ll ever need and plenty of classic Steamboat Springs atmosphere.

A complimentary continental breakfast is available from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. each day at the Steamboat Hotel.
