Book a trip to Napa Valley and spend a few nights at the Cedar Gables Inn and you will be whisked away to Renaissance England at one of the grandest and most treasured B & B's in Northern California. On Friday October 21, 1892 the Napa register noted "On the corner of Oak and Union streets stands one of the most unique dwellings in Napa County." In 1892 Edward S. Churchill had the 10,000 square foot inn built by the famous English architect Ernest Coxhead as a wedding present for his son E. Wilder Churchill. The Cedar Gables Inn became one of the big 4 mansions in the Napa Abajo/Fuller Park National Register Historic District.

Do you have a best friend who can cook like a contestant on Top Chef? The relationship with that friend is usually one of love and hate. You love her because she can do no wrong but your waistline hates her. Innkeeper and owner, Susie is that friend. Ken is more of a music man and can be seen playing the guitar on any given night as well as serenading guests. The Cedar Gables Inn offers the Ultimate Napa Culinary Experience: & "Hands-On" cooking classes with celebrity chefs of Napa Valley in an onsite, culinary showcase kitchen. Pair the fruits of your labor with a bottle of your favorite wine. Here is a bit of history on where you are about to stay: Built in 1892, Cedar Gables was designed by English architect Ernest Coxhead. The style is that of Old England, fashioned after the days of Shakespeare. Originally, the downstairs was not carpeted. It was kept well oiled and waxed in such a manner as to render itself to turn of the century fancy balls and gala parties galore. Today Cedar Gables is a 4 star bed and breakfast. Following in yesteryear's traditions it continues to host executive retreats, fancy dinners, holiday parties and grand social events.

Whether you are a history buff or someone looking for a little rest and relaxation, the Churchill Manor has it all. This magnificent mansion was originally built by Edward Churchill in 1889 and offers modern amenities in a historic setting. Located in the heart of downtown, this is the perfect place to simply be.

Edward Churchill and wife Mary spent many years calling the lovely three-story mansion home but today it is owned and operated by Joanna and Brian Jensen. The couple has lovingly refurbished the property and continue the tradition of hosting travelers and weddings in the grand scale of the 1800s. Churchill Mansion is located on Brown Street in downtown Napa. From the moment you walk through the doors to the time you say farewell, the hospitality of the innkeepers and their staff is unforgettable. This is the perfect setting for a quiet getaway with a loved one surrounded by romance and history. Choose from any of the luxurious guest rooms named after Napa Valley wine growing regions, called "Appellations," which have been painted on each door by a local Napa artist. Stroll through the manicured gardens, unwind on one of the wicker chairs on the wrap around veranda, and relax with a tasty glass of wine from a local vineyard. Mix in a light exercise with a game of croquet or a leisurely bike ride on one of the tandem bicycles, both are complimentary.

Our advice: plan the timing of your trip according to what your plans are during your time in Napa. January is the coldest month, with highs usually in the mid to high 50s. July is the hottest month, highs can reach 100+ but the average daily high in July is around 85. The Hennessey House was voted one of the 10 best wine region inns nationwide. Like many other B&B's in the area, it's story is unique just like it's architecture. The house was built by Dr. Edwin Hennessey, a well-known physician and former mayor of Napa.

Hennessey House is an 1889 Queen Anne Victorian with a great deal of character. The inn features stained-glass windows, and a wrap around porch and beautiful gardens. The inn is much more informal than our #2 pick but the romantic rooms are furnished in antiques. Some offer fireplaces, feather beds and spa tubs. The bathrooms all feature marble floors and antique brass fixtures. There is a sauna and a garden fountain. The innkeepers, Kevin and Lorri Walsh serve gourmet breakfasts which past guests rave about including blueberry-stuffed French toast and Eggs Florentine. Tea and cookies are offered daily at 3 p.m. Later in the evening, wine and cheese is served. Hennessy House is a short walk to nearby restaurants, shops and theaters. Don't forget the world-famous Napa Valley wineries.
