Many of the accommodations on Hilton Head Island are located within gated communities, but the surroundings at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa will give you an entirely different take on what a gated community is.

The resort is located within Port Royal Plantation, where the lush landscapes will make you feel like you’re on an island within an island. The swimming pools only add to the splendor, and it certainly helps that the plantation also happens to include three championship golf courses. Family time? No problem: The Westin features a kids’ program that makes full use of the pools, the beach and the island ambience. In the meantime, you can visit Westin’s Heavenly Spa or the WestinWORKOUT® Gym. And a selection of truly elegant rooms and suites combines with three restaurants and a light theme that recalls the classic Old South – a Hilton Head vacation that you certainly will never forget.

There are generally four good reasons to take a Hilton Head Island vacation – nature, golf, shopping and the beach. What we love most about Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort – and what places it in our No. 1 spot - is that it incorporates all four.

Part of that is the resort’s design, which features the lush, green foliage and lagoons that you might imagine you’d find if you were on your own deserted island. Bridges and footpaths are strategically placed among the beauty for both utility and to add a little more authentic intimacy to the surroundings. No matter which direction you travel through the resort’s 13 acres, you’ll eventually end up at the beach – though we recommend taking the shortest route, a mere 100 yards from your door. Yet somehow, the Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort is also the closest resort to Coligny Plaza, the most densely-populated collection of the island’s nightlife, shopping and dining. It’s also the closest branded resort to the famed Harbour Town Golf Links, where PGA pros play. And its 340 rooms and suites range from the colorful and dazzling to the spectacular and luxurious. You’ll love it here!

Highlights

The seasonal Camp Castaway at Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort is an unending thrill for kids ages 3-12 years, along with the resort’s Kid’s Evening Adventures.

Getting there

From US I-95, take Exit 8 (Highway 278) and cross the bridge onto Hilton Head Island. Stay left onto the Cross Island Parkway until it becomes Palmetto Bay Road. Take Palmetto Bay Road to Sea Pines Circle. Exit the Circle onto Highway 278. Take a right into Shipyard Plantation.

We’ve wondered why the area around Hilton Head Island is known so much for golf and tennis, though we suspect it has something to do with the climate or the carefully preserved natural beauty. Whatever the case, if anyone asks we just say this is the home of Kiawah Island Golf and Tennis Resort. Enough said.

Is this the finest place in the U.S. for golf? It’s hard to argue considering there are five championship golf courses here, with designer credits to Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Gary Player and Clyde Johnston. This is where you’ll find the famed Ocean Course, host of the 2012 PGA Championships. And each of these courses is an Audubon-certified bird sanctuary. Kiawah Island Golf and Tennis Resort also happens to be one of the world’s greatest places for tennis, with two tennis complexes, two pro shops and an endless supply of professional knowledge and equipment rentals. If you need more – or perhaps just some time to relax – the Sanctuary Spa is one of only three Mobil Five Star spas in North America!

Highlights

The Mobil Five Star Sanctuary Hotel is just one of the accommodation options at Kiawah Island Golf and Tennis Resort, along with villas and luxury vacation homes.

Related activities

Explore salt marshes, maritime forests, dunes and much more courtesy of the naturalists on staff at Kiawah Island Golf and Tennis Resort.

Getting there

We neglected to mention that Kiawah Island Golf and Tennis Resort is not actually on Hilton Head Island, although once you get here you won’t mind a bit. Charleston International Airport, follow International Boulevard for two miles. Follow the signs for Interstate 526 West and follow it for six miles. At the end of the interstate, turn right onto Savannah Highway/US 17 South. Continue on Savannah Highway/US 17 South for five miles and turn left onto Main Road. Continue on Main Road for 15 miles, you will arrive at a roundabout. Stay in the left lane as you enter the roundabout and proceed 3/4 way around to the Kiawah Island Parkway exit. Once on the island, pass through the security gate and the resort will be two miles past the gate.

There are many reasons why Sea Pines Resort is a distinguished Hilton Head Island destination, but let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. The resort, divided into four distinct neighborhoods, spans 5,000 acres – nearly a third of Hilton Head Island.

It turns out that the whole Intracoastal Waterway experience – kayaking, sailing and plentiful plant and wildlife to witness in waters of varying depths – is privately accessible. And it’s only thus at one timeshare resort, that being Bluewater Resort and Marina.

It also turns out that Bluewater Resort and Marina is the newest timeshare resort on Hilton Head Island, and along with four phases of beautiful two- and three-bedroom villas it proudly features a private dock along with eight single kayaks and four doubles. If you like, you can take a guided water adventure – right from the dock – courtesy of two Lowcountry adventure specialists. If you’re in the mood for some land action, most of the Bluewater Resort and Marina rentals include golf and tennis privileges at a number of locations around Hilton Head Island, which is legendary as a haven for both sports. To top it off, there’s even an onsite Activity Center with an indoor pool, a sauna, a fitness studio, a game room and more.

The thing about Hilton Head Island is that, for a place with slightly over 40 sq. miles of land, there’s so much to do and explore. What’s even more amazing is how much you’ll find on the 2,000 acres of beauty known as Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.

To start with, there are not one but three championship golf courses, including the Arthur Hills Course, the exquisitely challenging George Fazio Course and the completely renovated Robert Trent Jones Course, which features one of only two oceanfront holes on Hilton Head Island. Palmetto Dunes is equally serious about tennis, with 25 courts and a variety of world-class instructional programs. There’s also a marina – the largest on Hilton Head Island, in fact – along with the casual yet upscale shopping and dining of the Mediterranean-style Shelter Cove Harbour village. And speaking of a village, that’s what you’ll find in Hilton Head resort accommodations at Palmetto Dunes – a dazzling selection of villas and luxury homes with style to spare and locations for anything your heart desires on your Hilton Head Island vacation.

We love it when the name of a resort tells you so much about what you can expect once you arrive. Such is the case with Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort, and you’ll quickly discover that there’s much more here than even the name describes.

First, the beach: that’s you in a private beach villa, spreading out among either one or two bedrooms and surrounded by first-class features like full kitchens, bunk beds and up to 850 sq. ft. of space. At any time, it’s just a few steps to the beautiful island beach – the resort rests on 55 oceanfront acres - through any of four well-adorned entrances to the sand. The tennis: ten lighted courts, with a pro shop and a full staff of tennis pros ready to help you with your swing, plus a selection of two-bedroom tennis villas. Everything else: where to start? The largest oceanfront pool on Hilton Head Island is a good place, along with the indoor fitness center, playground and picnic area. And the activities for kids at Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort never end, whether it’s mini golf or hitting the waterpark on the island or participating in dozens of planned ice cream socials, tie-dye, sandcastle contests and much more.
