There has never been a better reason to take off work during the week than staying at our No. 2 spot, Inn on Lake Granbury Bed and Breakfast. Of course, weekends are worth it as well, but we’re going to let you in on a few weekday special touches that made us fall head over cowboy boot heels!

At the inn, enjoy the leisure and luxury of a lakefront vacation home with the attention to detail a traditional B and B lends. Walk down to the bluffs or swing beneath the oak trees on the shores of Lake Granbury. Or, if you want to dip into another Texan body of water, try the Inn’s oasis-like pool with a waterfall. On every third Tuesday of the month you can take a cooking class given by a gourmet chef from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area! Don’t forget the rooms! All are uniquely decorated and themed with rich, full color palettes from the floor up. Rest in front of your stone fireplace, in your jetted tub or on your balcony with a lake view.

Our No. 9 pick is a grand, architecturally pleasing American Foursquare, a style popularized by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright – who, we are sure, would also approve of the superb experience inside of this magnificent Ingleside Bed and Breakfast.

Ingleside dishes out Texas country fare in its delectable breakfasts while upholding historic Brenham charm with richly decorated rooms. Sit down to a plate of classic Ingleside baked eggs with cheese sausage, crunchy French toast or a caramelized banana omelet garnished with strawberries and sides of biscuit and maple-cured sausage. Once your belly is full, a quick morning snooze may be in order. Lie down beneath the lacy canopy above your bed in the Canopy Room, on the cherry two-poster king bed in the Wildflower Room or in the ruby red plush wingback chairs in the Camille Room. When you awake refreshed and still satisfied, stroll out the front door and into historic downtown Brenham to browse through the ample antique stores. Awaken the young cowboy or cowgirl at heart by petting the miniature horses raised by the Poor Clare nuns. Or, enjoy a night out on the town at the Unity Theatre which holds its performances in a restored warehouse.

When we began searching for high-quality Texas B and Bs, we weren’t sure both beds and breakfasts could be delivered in style. However, all doubts were laid to rest at our No. 10 pick, Granbury’s The Iron Horse Inn.

The Iron Horse Inn is a gabled, 100-year-old Craftsman-style mansion with a legacy that dates back to 1885. The antique elegance of the rooms, the tranquil garden hideaways and the authentic Southern hospitality combine for a B and B experience bursting with originality. The Cogdell Suite is the splurge every couple should indulge in – bedroom furniture from the original house, a solarium with 13 windows and a 6.5-ft.-claw-foot tub. The wine cellar, also dating back to the original house, is a close second with its limestone walls and private entrance to the gardens. The gardens themselves are brimming with 100-year-old pecan trees and 400-year-old oak trees. Stroll by the waterfall and koi pond or swing with your sweetie by wildflowers. Breakfast is not something to be missed; a three-course culinary delight on an 1880s oak dining table with other friendly guests and the owners who go above and beyond to make your Texas B and B vacation comfortable and memorable!

Highlights

Upon arrival, feel right at home with a tour of the historic inn and complimentary wine and freshly baked dessert. The hospitality extends throughout your stay with services such as making Granbury dinner or theater reservations for you.

Fun facts

The Iron Horse Inn is the largest historic home in Granbury, TX. The original Victorian mansion, built by Daniel Cogdell, was destroyed in an early 1900s fire. It was rebuilt as a smaller, but still just as elegant mansion as the original. The name for the mansion is a tribute to Cogdell’s ties with the railroad.

The Iron Horse Inn has many packages to suit your occasion: Proposal, Anniversary, Picnic in the Garden, and our favorite – Moonlight, Munchies and Massage Package. Or, design your own!

Bliss is defined as “supreme happiness.” But this is only the first part of the definition. The second part consists of “a Texas B and B, a historic working ranch and quintessential Cat Springs lodging, all in one place.” The full word that renders such a thorough definition is Blisswood.

Blisswood Bed and Breakfast at Lehmann Legacy Ranch, sports classic Texas country charm and a magical breath of fresh air. The most enchanting centerpiece is the island-isolated gazebo, reachable by a white arch foot bridge, on the aptly named Enchanted Lake. Cabins with unique furnishings and heritage play host to your serene southern getaway. Stay in the Writer’s Cabin (our personal favorite, of course) – a single room cabin with a desk the Confederate Army carried with them on their maneuvers. Or, relax on the spacious porch or in the private pool at the Dog Trot House, so named because dogs used to trot in the breezeway. The surrounding scenery only increases in beauty as you explore the seven-circuit labyrinth in the Mystical Forest by mountain bike, cross meadows and creeks on horseback or take a leisurely hike and spot bison, deer, alpaca, camels, peacocks and more!

Highlights

Propose on one knee or hold your wedding in the idyllic Enchanted Lake gazebo! It was designed to cater to romance - in fact, the gazebo was supposedly constructed for the wedding of a previous ranch owner’s daughter.

Related activities

Stay at Blisswood and attend the Via Colori Street Painting Festival held in Cat Springs or visit the Stephen F. Austin and Washington-on-the-Brazos State Parks.

Related Onsite Offerings

Accommodations at Blisswood include a continental breakfast, which is placed in your cabin or house so that you can enjoy it whenever you’d like.

We all know that on vacation we may experience long hours in the car, sunburns and unwanted critters. But there’s certainly nothing pesky about our No. 4 pick, the Ant Street Inn in downtown Brenham!

Located in the Historic Ant Street District, Ant Street Inn practices that true Deep South hospitality that makes the inn your home away from home. Experience the peace and quiet of the countryside lounging in a rocking chair on the inn’s veranda, which overlooks the beautifully landscaped courtyard. At the same time, enjoy the convenient proximity to all of Brenham’s attractions, such as the Pleasant Hill Winery, George Bush Presidential Library and the Jersey Barnyard, a dairy farm that is home to Belle, the Blue Bell Creamery cow. But the quandary for us wasn’t so much what to do in Brenham as it was which room of Ant Street Inn to stay in. We couldn’t decide between the romantic Charleston, with its soft rose hues and rosewood bed; the New Orleans, with a draped and canopied bed and walls decorated with art from New Orleans; or the Memphis, with an original 100-year-old freight elevator in the center of the brick-walled room.

Highlights

Celebrate one more year of becoming wiser at Ant Street Inn with their Birthday Package! Have a birthday cake with candles and a bouquet of flowers waiting for you in your room.

Getting there

From Navasota, go southwest on Hwy. 105 and follow Business 105 to the courthouse. Pass the courthouse and turn left at the next corner, which is Park Street. Go two blocks to Commerce and you will see Ant Street Inn.

Our No. 3 B and B had us turned around a bit. We couldn’t decide, with the draping silky smooth curtains, elaborately carved headboards and Victorian-era portraits in gold frames if this was a Texas B and B or a French boutique luxury hotel.

What we did find was that The Sanford House Inn and Spa is a unique blend of intimate B and B charm and tasteful luxury. The wraparound porch encircles the stately Sanford House and provides cool shade for those Southern scorcher afternoons. Or, if you’re a sun lover, the outdoor pool in the Grand Courtyard is the modern amenity worth dipping into. And though your room may be appointed with marble bathrooms, a Jacuzzi or fireplace, it still retains that secluded privacy and cozy at-home atmosphere you’d expect from a bed and breakfast. We’re sure this is the reason Sanford House was named the Official Best of Texas Romantic Getaways in 2009.

Highlights

The Grand Courtyard has a raised pavilion, gazebo, colorful flowers and shade trees that are ideal for a Texas wedding, wedding reception, cocktail party and more!
