Things to do in Ocean City

With modest beginnings as a 17th century isolated fishing village, Ocean City has grown into a one of the premier getaway destinations in the Northeast. Vacation seekers have been coming to the island since 1875 when the area's first resort, The Atlantic Hotel opened its doors. The precursor to the U.S Coast Guard, the U.S. Lifesaving Service followed in 1878 cementing Ocean City as a central hub for the surrounding area. Now Ocean City is filled with activities from fishing to antiquing. Let the travel gurus at resorts and lodges direct you to some of the best activities in the area.

Since 1902 the most famous and recognizable location in the city is the Ocean City Boardwalk. This can’t-miss three mile long attraction is loaded with activity and much more. Either on bike or on foot are both great ways to take in the historic and entertaining surroundings. Kids will love the rides such as the towering ferris wheel and the historic 1902 carousel. All the fun will work up an appetite and the boardwalk is filled with restaurants that feature local seafood and almost any type of meal under the sun. Shopping is another event on the boardwalk with stores that will satisfy any shopping desires. Almost everyday there are free events, movies, music and fun things for people of all ages. The boardwalk is a can’t miss location and deserves a large portion of any Ocean City vacation.

What better place to visit than one of the historic locations that helped establish the area at the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum. As previously mentioned the station opened in the 1870’s as base for the Surfmen of the US Lifesaving Service. It remained in operation as a Coast Guard base until 1964 when it closed its doors. In 1977 the building was in such bad shape that it was considered for demolition. Concerned citizens spearheaded a campaign to save and move the base to its current location. Now it showcases the rich history of the brave soldiers who were stationed there and the history of the boardwalk itself. It’s a great place to view the local fishing fleet and all the vessels that are coming and going. Kids will love the aquariums that are full of local sea creatures and the entertaining exhibits that highlight the area's historical significance.

Northside Park is the largest and most popular park facility in Ocean City. This location has something to offer everyone who visits. Spread over 58 acres the park features an extensive list of activities that include baseball fields, concessions, fishing, piers, walking paths, tennis courts, playgrounds, large picnic area and more. In addition there is a 14,000 square foot gymnasium that has kitchen, community rooms, patios and sitting areas. Don’t forget the 21,000 square foot multi sports arena. Equipment and facility rentals are encouraged so visitors are guaranteed the space for the activities and games they want to participate in. So grab a lunch and the family because a day spent at Northside Park will entertain and leave lasting memories.

Let the stress of everyday life melt away in front of the calming blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Ocean City Beach. Stretching the entire 10 miles of the eastern coast of Fenwick Island, the beach gives you a range of ocean and island vistas. According to the locals the beach carries two different vibes depending on location. The north end of the beach provides beach goers a more tranquil place to sit back and soak up the sunshine. The south end of the beach runs parallel to the board walk. This means a higher concentration of people and more activities to participate in. The beaches are free to access and have perks such as lifeguards, clean sand, dining, water sports, beach sports and public facilities. No true island getaway is complete without a trip to the beach, Ocean City Beach will over deliver on almost every expectation.
