A Sweet Summer Experience in the Peach Capital of Texas

Named by the Texas Legislature as Peach Capital of Texas, Weatherford is a destination that combines a rich history with a variety of modern activities. Its collection of historic homes from the mid-1800’s is impressive, containing architectural styles including Greek Revival, Victorian, and Queen Anne. The city is also a hub for learning about western culture, and locations like the Doss Heritage and Culture Center shed light on the cowboys and cattle barons that helped establish the city.

The Parker County Peach Festival is one of the largest summer events in Texas, and it will take place July 8, across historical Downtown Weatherford. The festival is held to commemorate the annual peach harvest, and more 25,000 people attend each year. Visitors will encounter more than 200 art, craft, and food vendors, selling everything from peach cobbler to handmade jewelry. The Peach Pedal Bike Ride will return this year and will feature three rides (61,38, 29 miles) which support the United Way of Parker County and the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce. A variety of entertainers will perform on three stages, and competition will determine the best foods at the festival. Kid’s will find plenty of fun activities such as a mini train ride, Home Depot activity booth, games, and more. We got the chance to interview Tammy Gazzola, a representative of the event, to learn more about this all ages spectacular.

RAL: What demographic does your event attract? Children? Families? Couples?

TG: The festival is family friendly and offers something for everyone!

RAL: What makes this event unique?

TG: We have over 200 art, craft, food, and activity vendors. We celebrate our favorite fruit, but the event has much more than just peaches! We ask that our vendors feature handmade/hand embellished items, so it's easy for attendees to find unique merchandise.

RAL: Take me through the activities of a day at the event.

TG: Local businesses will provide free games, activities, treats, and even mini train rides for children. Home Depot will have their activity booth so that kids can make a variety of peach-themed items.

RAL: Will there be any guest appearances?

TG: We have three entertainment stages packed with local entertainment. You'll have the chance to meet the Peach Queen, Ms. Senior Parker County, the winners from the food competition, and lots of great local singers and dancers!

TG: Yes, folks can ask for the Peach Festival discount when making reservations at local hotels. We have over 800 hotel rooms in town!

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

TG: Yes! The tens of thousands of extra visitors provide a significant economic impact on Weatherford!

RAL: Does the event support a particular cause in the community?

TG: The Rotary Club uses it as a fundraiser for its Meals on Wheels project. Several local churches work at the event, using the money for special projects. Our hospital sells Peach Juleps (non-alcoholic) and uses the funds raised for their employee outreach fund. Our event helps make a difference to a lot of folks in our community!

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

TG: The charm of downtown Weatherford makes a beautiful backdrop for this premier one-day event! You'll find unique handcrafted items throughout the fair, that you would not find anywhere else. You will not leave hungry with our wide variety of food vendors ranging from street tacos to gator tail!
