Since the late 1950’s, the Newport Folk Festival has been a big draw in Newport and the surrounding communities. This event is family friendly and one of the most comprehensive gatherings of folk musicians in the Northeastern United States. This year they will have over 50 different live acts playing on multiple stages during the three days of the event. In addition to the great music, you’ll find talks, special performances, and plenty of family-themed activities to enjoy. There will be a wide selection of food and refreshment vendors to choose from if you get hungry. Make your next Rhode Island experience one you’ll always remember and head to the Newport Folk Festival. ResortsandLodges.com got the chance to interview Jay Sweet, Executive Producer of Newport Folk Festival, to talk about this fun event.

RAL: How long has the event been running?

JS: The first Newport Folk Festival was in 1959. It ran every summer until 1971, and then started back up again in 1985 and has been running ever since.

RAL: How many annual participants do you draw?

JS: The festival has sold out the last several years, which means we have 10,000 people coming each day.

RAL: What is the typical demographic makeup of the event?

JS: The great thing about Newport Folk Festival is that we get all kinds of people, of all ages and backgrounds. You’ll see teenagers watching artists alongside people who have been coming for decades.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

JS: The festival’s history lends it a weight that’s special to Newport. Artists and attendees alike all know that big moments in our collective musical and cultural history have happened here. So we’re able to get big acts to play our relatively small festival, and attendees that really listen and respect the music. Not to mention how beautiful and historic Fort Adams is, looking out over Newport Harbor in the middle of July.

RAL: Take me through a day at the event. What activities will attendees find?

JS: Obviously, there’s a lot of music to watch, and that’s the focal point. You can take a break by going to see discussions at the Museum Stage, special performances at the Squarespace Studios, family friendly activities at the Late July Tent, and visiting the craft vendors.

RAL: Will there be food and refreshments?

JS: Yes, we have lots of great food vendors at the venue that come from all over, but with a strong local presence, and there’s something for everybody like ice cream, gumbo, falafel, burgers, grilled cheese and Del’s Lemonade.

RAL: What is the overall environment like?

JS: The festival takes place at Fort Adams State Park. It’s an old coastal artillery post established in 1799, located right at the mouth of Newport Harbor. Our stages have beautiful views of the harbor, Narragansett Bay, and the inside quad of the centuries-old fort.

RAL: What can an attendee expect to find for local lodging?

JS: Newport is chock-full of bed & breakfasts, boutique hotels, and unique independent accommodations. The city has lots of New England charm and interesting coastal architecture.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

JS: We have a great relationship with the people of Newport and Rhode Island. It’s a small state and there’s mutual pride and appreciation between the community and the festival.

RAL: Does this drive business to your local economy?

JS: The festival brings in over 10,000 people to Newport, so yes, there’s inevitably considerable business that goes into the local economy.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

JS: The Newport Festivals Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit, and we provide a grant for the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County for their after school music programs.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

JS: The Newport Folk Festival has a beautiful location, delicious food, wonderful people and an incredible selection of live music.
