All the Fun you can Reel in at this Family Fishing Celebration

Hayward’s natural beauty and famous community festivals make it the perfect location for planning a Wisconsin vacation. The activities available in Chequamegon National Forest and opportunities for watersports in the Hayward Lakes Area will fill any outdoor enthusiast's itinerary. Hayward’s small town atmosphere, the variety of shops, and top-notch fishing might turn your next trip into an extended getaway.

Musky Fest is a family-friendly celebration which combines a community carnival and fishing tournament for a one-of-a-kind experience. It will take place June 22-25, with events and activities centered around the town’s historic Main Street. It’s one of the largest community events in Wisconsin, attracting more than 50,000 people annually. Festivities kick off with the Family Fishing Spectacular, which is a multi-day fishing contest for all ages with a $100,000 purse. Patrons can also visit more than 100 different vendors in the marketplace area, selling unique handmade items. The Musk Fest Car Show features a variety of vintage, performance, and unique automobiles. Everyone in attendance should make a point to see the Grand Parade, which runs down Main Street and includes floats, costumed performers, marching bands, and more. We got the opportunity to interview Kathy Larson, a representative of the event, to learn more about this fishing spectacular.

KL: Musky Fest attracts around 50,000 people each year with a very mixed demographic.

RAL: What makes the event unique?

KL: It takes place on our Historic Main Street which is on the list of the Top 25 Main Streets in America. We have a broad mix of events to attract many different demographics and this year we have added a $100,000 Family Fishing Spectacular!

RAL: Walk me through the activities patrons will encounter.

KL: Activities start on Friday with over 100 vendors featuring only handmade items as well as great shopping in our downtown business. Enjoy a visit with Minnesota Jack Sparrow, a watermelon eating contest, carnival, and baseball games. Spend some time fishing or take the kids to Shue’s Pond to learn to fish and get in on the Lions Club kid’s fishing contest. Friday evening has a special showing of Blood Hook, a slasher movie filmed at the Park Theater in the 1980's. The night ends with an 80’s Throwback Party and 80’s all Class Reunion on Main Street featuring a performance by Ladies of the 80’s!

Saturday features a car show, Dilly Bar Eating Contest, Hula Hoop Contest, more fishing, and live music. Stop at the Moccasin Bar to see the World Record Musky and take a trip to the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, featuring a four-story musky and the best views of Hayward right from its mouth! The evening ends with the announcement of the Fishing Contest winners, and the Queen’s Ball on Main Street featuring Blue Collar Cocktail.

Sunday starts with the 5K/10K fun run/walk and ends with the Grand Parade on Main Street at 1:00 pm. Musky Court will be present downtown all weekend. Dining can include event vendors as well as restaurants like Angler’s, Gridiron Sports Bar, and Grill on Main Street.

RAL: What will attendees find for local lodging?

KL: We have a great selection, from traditional hotels with all the amenities to RV parks. Follow the link for a complete listing of lodging options.

RAL: Why should people come?

KL: Musky Fest is the event that kicks off our summer season, and is an important fundraiser for local non-profit organizations and the Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce. The event grants visitors the opportunity to celebrate with locals and enjoy all of the great things the Hayward Lakes Area has to offer! This event is a great way for guests to feel local!
