Lush, vibrant and home to a bounty of picture perfect vistas, Seward, Alaska, is the ultimate destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Located at the mouth of Resurrection Bay and in the shadow of the majestic Mt. Marathon, the area has a unique ecology and plenty of great activities to enjoy.

Located just a two-and-half-hour drive south of Anchorage on the doorstep of Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward is scenic and easily accessible. Once you get here and soak in the amazing landscape, it's time to enjoy the ample activities and attractions. When it comes to outdoor activities, there are too many to name. The beautiful azure waters of area are perfect for boat tours, sea life viewing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and just about any water sport that pops into mind. The local and regional parks are second to none. From exploring dense forests to helicopter tours of massive glaciers, Alaska rarely disappoints. In addition to the endless outdoor activities and breathtaking beauty, Seward is home to great restaurants, museums, landmarks and even an aquarium. Another great aspect to the Seward community is their fun and entertaining events like the annual Mt. Marathon Race.

As popular as it is historic, the Mt. Marathon Race is proudly entering its 89th year. With nearly 1,000 people participating and more than 25,000 people in attendance, this is one of the largest events in the region. The race has its competitors race up the flank of Mt. Marathon to the summit and all the way back down, all while navigating a variety of challenging natural obstacles. Three different divisions will participate including junior’s, men and women. In addition to all the racing fun, the event is directly tied to the Seward 4th of July festivities. The celebration lasts the entirety of the holiday weekend and has something for all ages. From fireworks and a big parade, to fun games and delicious treats, it’s all here waiting for you. Make your next summer adventure an epic one and head to beautiful Seward for the Mt. Marathon Race. We got the chance to interview Cindy Clock, Executive Director of the Seward Chamber of Commerce, to talk about this unique race.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

CC: The Mt. Marathon Race began in 1915. This years marks the 89th running (the race was not held during the first and second World Wars). At this year’s event, we will have around 700 adult racers and 250 junior racers (7-18 years old) participating. As far as our crowd is concerned, we will have approximately 25,000 spectators come to watch the race and enjoy the festivities covering almost every demographic. There are quite a few "running" families with parents and children both participating.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

CC: This is the second oldest footrace in the nation, and it attracts elite runners from across the globe. Racers and fans alike are devoted to this 4th of July tradition in Seward. This is a great community to visit, with beautiful vistas, clean air and friendly faces everywhere. The city is loaded with great things to do, as well as all the great activities associated with the race.

RAL: What can attendees expect during the event?

CC: We have three different start times for the races. The first start time is at 9:00 am, then the second heat begins at 11:00 am, and finally the last heat gets going at 2:30 pm. The racers dress in bright colors and race up the flank of the mountain. This is a one-of-a-kind race that traverses more than three miles of forested and rocky terrain. Runners do whatever they can to climb, crawl, walk and run through this challenging course.

That being said, Seward lodging is typically sold out by March or April for this holiday weekend, so visitors need to make reservations early! Visit this page to see the wide variety of local accommodations.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

CC: The Mt. Marathon Race and July 4th Festival are huge for all local businesses. The event is organized by the Seward Chamber of Commerce, and racer entry fees are used to fund the event -- everything from trophies and finisher shirts to porta-potties and waste pick-up.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

CC: Spectators are typically in awe of what the Mt. Marathon racers accomplish. Once you see the mountain, you will be amazed that anyone is brave enough to challenge it. A favorite side event is the mini-Mt. Marathon race held for children aged between two and six, who participate in five different waves beginning at the official race start line.
