Hill Country Home & Garden Expo: Hill Country's Top Home Improvement Experience

Fredericksburg, Texas has a rich history that dates back to its creation back in 1846. Otfried Hans von Meusebach founded the city as a refuge for Germans who were escaping the economic, social and political climate of mid-19th century Germany. The economy and lifestyle in Fredericksburg centered around ranching, farming and agriculture. This way of life continued into the mid 1900’s. It wasn't until President Lyndon Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson began to visit the town that it gained nationwide notoriety. Since then, Fredericksburg hasn't looked back. Now the city has over 10,000 residents and is one of the leaders for agri-tourism in the entire country. In fact, the city is also known as the “Peach Capital of Texas”.

Fredericksburg is a scenic and activity filled vacation destination. No matter when you visit, you’ll find something for you. You can experience the area's unique history hands-on at the local museums and historical sites. The gentle rolling hills and lush vegetation of the surrounding area contain many parks, trails and opportunities to enjoy the great Texas outdoors. In town there are many boutique shops and great restaurants to visit. Fredericksburg also resides in the famous Hill Country Wine Region, where you’ll encounter over 45 different wineries. Stop and sample the wines and enjoy natural surroundings you won't find anywhere else. Regardless of the season, the city features many entertaining, informative, and interesting events to participate in. One of the most popular is the Hill Country Home & Garden Expo.

Entering its third year, the Hill Country Home & Garden Expo has been making quite an impact on its partons. This event takes almost everything you need to know about home improvement and gardening, and puts it in one place. You’ll find everything from hands-on demonstrations to talks by experts. Whether you just dreaming of a project or ready to execute, the expo can help. The show really sets itself apart with its overall atmosphere. The venue and the vendors combine to create an experience that is proactive, warm, and welcoming. ResortsandLodges.com got the opportuntity to speak to Jennifer Harper, Representative for the Hill Country Home & Garden Show, to talk about the event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

JH: The name of this event is the Hill Country Home & Garden Expo and we are heading into our third year. The event is held at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds on Feb 27th and 28th. At the show we feature all things home and garden related including home building, design, landscape, patios, pool and spa, remodeling, lighting, windows, doors, A/V equipment, appliances, siding, gutters and much more. We also have some fun things mixed in including entertainment, wine tasting, classic cars, and door prizes. The demographics of our crowd include everyone, but we primarily see tourists from out of town, families, and retirees looking to relocate.

RAL: What makes the event unique?

JH: This event stands out from other Home and Garden shows because it's a local affair. It takes place at our fairgrounds and not at a large football stadium. We have entertainment, exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees that all care about each other. While visiting other shows, I've noticed how big and cold they can be. This show stands in contrast because it’s very personal and welcoming. The expo combines personal business dealings and a genuine concern for the well being of its community members. Our expo is truly one-of-a-kind!

RAL: What will attendees find at the expo?

JH: The show starts off with a bang! The Fredericksburg High School Jazz band is kicking off the show at 9:00 am and welcoming the vendors and attendees. The show is emceed by local marketing guru, Sarah Batch, from Sarah Batch Creative. Show presentations include "How to Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds to your Garden", "Fire Safety” with singer/songwriter Conrad Gonzales, and DIY demonstrations. Some of the other activities that you’ll find here include: wine tasting, product demos, food sampling, and various live entertainment options. For guest appearances we will have the previously mentioned Conrad Gonzales performing his fire safety songs and the Fredericksburg Fire Department will be on-hand to talk fire safety as well. If all the activity works up a hunger, don’t worry! We will have a selection of food vendors onsite. The overall environment of the expo is friendly and casual, so be ready to have a great and unique experience.

RAL: Tell me about the local lodging situation.

JH: There is an abundance of lodging options in the Fredericksburg area. From mom and pop smaller establishments to resorts, we have it all here. Places to consider include: Inn on Barons Creek, Settlers Crossing and Alte Welt Gaesthoff.

RAL: What does the expo mean to the community?

JH: The expo provides a nice boost to the local economy. The shops, restaurants, lodging providers, gas stations, and more see an increase in sales during the event. It’s a great place to get to know new people with similar interests as well as professionals from areas you're interested in. Also, you won't find many other events where you can get the amount of information and contacts that you’ll find here.

A portion of all ticket sales will go to The Hill Country Needs Council, which coincides with their fundraiser month. The show will also donate money to the Fredericksburg High School Band.

RAL: Why should people come?

JH: Folks get excited for spring. Whether they are visitors or residents, everyone wants to think about the glorious weather just around the corner. This is a fun event that brings cheer and warmth to our attendees.
