Crystal Cabin Fever: Ice Sculptures, Hot Chocolate and a Great Family Experience

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of the Poconos in Eastern Pennsylvania, Lakeville is a warm and inviting mountain village with plenty to offer visitors to the area. Before you reach this mountain village, the Pocono Mountains will welcome you with panoramic vistas of the stunning snow covered landscape. The area is well known for its fun things to do year round and especially during the winter months. You’ll find ski resorts that are great for downhill skiing and a network of scenic trails begging to be explored via cross-country skis or snowshoes. Area museums and art galleries showcase a wide range of unique and beautiful creations from many different art disciplines. Without traveling far, you’ll find a multitude of dining establishments that feature everything from fine dining to bar food. Another major draw to the area during the winter months is the number of fun events and festivals, such as Crystal Cabin Fever, located right in cozy Lakeville.

Long ago, one of the major industries of the area was ice harvesting. The leading ice harvesting company back then, Sculpted Ice Works, still exists today and now is one of the leading ice sculpture companies in America. For the past decade, Sculpted Ice Works has been holding Crystal Cabin Fever. This popular local event attracts thousands of people from the area and the entire region to the beautiful mountain village of Lakeville. At the event you’ll find unique ice carvings of animals, historic locations, dinosaurs, and much more. This is a great event for the entire family with kid-themed activities, tours of the factory, and a 50-foot ice slide. Refreshments and food are available for purchase as well as delicious s’mores and hot chocolate. Dress warm and bring the entire family for a winter experience like no other at Crystal Cabin Fever. We got the opportunity to interview Kat Bauer, the Marketing Coordinator for Sculpted Ice Works, to talk about the event.

RAL: Tell me a little about the event.

KB: This year is our 10th Anniversary and we are very excited to be featuring that as the theme as well! Typically we bring in between 8,000 and 12,000 people each year. Demographically we see everyone at our event. The event is fun for people of all ages. Whether you are coming as a family, group, or a couple on a date, there is something for everyone!

RAL: What makes Crystal Cabin Fever Unique?

KB: What makes this event unique is of course the ice! We use over 100 tons of ice to create over-the-top sculptures and structures such as our 50-foot Ice Slide and the unique ice sculptures that you won't find anywhere else.

RAL: Take me through what attendees will find during a typical day at the event.

KB: We have great activities available for our patrons, including: our 50-foot ice slide, ice carving demonstrations, scavenger hunts, factory tours, and exhibits of the Natural Ice Harvesting Museum, to only name a few. For food and refreshment we have food available for purchase at our BBQ area, as well as DIY s'mores, complimentary hot chocolate and various treats that will be available for purchase. The event is primarily held outdoors so weather appropriate clothes such as snow pants and winter coats are encouraged. The factory tour and museum are both held indoors, so you won’t have to stay outside the entire time. The environment of Crystal Cabin Fever is an immersive and fun family experience.

RAL: What can attendees expect to find for local lodging and are there any special deals set up for the event?

KB: The area has many lodging options from luxurious resorts to comfortable motels available to travelers. No matter your budget, or size of your group, you’ll be able to find the ideal lodging for you. There are no discounts set up, however, a couple of our sponsors include The Comfort Inn, located in Hamlin, and The Lakeview Motel, located in Hawley.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

KB: Crystal Cabin Fever has a dedicated following in the community and we strive to provide a memorable and fun experience for all who attend. We try to work with the community to not only make this event a success for us, but to also encourage people to take advantage of all the great businesses in the area. The community welcomes visitors and benefits from the extra revenue provided to them throughout the duration of our event.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

KB: It’s a fun and unique event for all ages and backgrounds. Our selection of ice sculptures combined with the selection of fun activities make this event one-of-a-kind. Where else will you find dinosaurs, pirate ships, villages, animal and world famous attractions, all expertly carved into blocks of ice? We welcome and encourage everyone to experience our great event!
