Carolina Cup: A Historic Sporting Event in the Heart of South Carolina

Are you searching for a fun and warm location to kick off spring in style? If so, look no further than Camden, South Carolina. The city has a long and storied history that dates back to 1732, when the town was created by a decree from King George II. In 1758, Joseph Kershaw came to town to establish a mercantile center, and as a result Camden began to grow. Camden was crucial to South Carolina’s early growth as a trading outpost and crossroads. In fact, it was so profitable and strategic that the British used it for a base during the Revolutionary War until they were booted out in 1781.

The town was an important supply and medical center during the Civil War, but these factors also made it a target for General Sherman’s infamous march through the South. The town suffered a few bruises during the war, but by the end of the 19th century Camden was reinvigorated as a tourism hot spot. Camden is now a beautiful and welcoming city of roughly 7,000 residents. It embodies the perfect combination of old southern charm along with modern activities and culture.

When it's time to find local things to do Camden won't disappoint. The city is the oldest inland city in the state and features a great display of living history in the expertly preserved architecture, landmarks, museums and public areas. The surrounding wilderness is also stunning with a wide array of wildlife and vegetation, plus many scenic trails to get an up-close experience. Lakes, rivers, and streams are all over the landscape and provide ample opportunities for fishing, beach activities and so much more. If you need a break from the outdoors, there are many boutique shops, unique restaurants and great live entertainment venues right in the downtown area. Camden is also home to large events and festivals, like the historic Carolina Cup, which brings nearly 70,000 people into town each spring.

For over eight decades the Carolina Cup has been one of the premier horse racing and social events in the Southeastern United States. Prior to WWII, the Cup attracted people from all over the country. Since that time, the crowd has primarly come from the Southeast, but the event hasn't lost any momentum. This massive event brings people in to experience the races, social atmosphere, and the unique fashions. Six thoroughbred races take place at one of the finest horse racing courses on the planet, Springdale Race Course. Aside from the socializing and horse races, there are plenty of great food options, and of course tasty libations and refreshments. Gather your friends and head to Camden to experience one of the best ways to kick off spring in all of the Southeastern United States. ResortsandLodges.com got the chance to interview the Carolina Cup Racing Association's Chief Executive Officer, Nick Ellis, to talk about this prominant and historic event.

RAL: Tell me a little bit about the event.

NE: The Carolina Cup is a time honored annual steeplechase horse race that attracts tens of thousands of people annually into Camden, South Carolina. This is the largest steeplechase horse racing event on the national circuit and we are proudly celebrating our 81st annual race. People from all across America make their way here just for the race. In a recent survey we found that roughly 85% of people who attend are repeat patrons of the festival. The race is held at the beautiful Springdale Race Course and is one of the longest running traditions in South Carolina.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

NE: Not only is this one of the top sporting events in the region, but it’s also a can't-miss social event for those who attend. You’ll find unique and cutting edge fashions being worn by attendees and some of the most unique tailgate parties anywhere. It’s widely considered to be a rite of spring in South Carolina.

Another unique aspect of the Carolina Cup is the trophy, the actual Carolina Cup. The cup was crafted way back in 1704 by Irish silversmith Alexander Sinclair, and it's one of the oldest and most valuable trophies in all of professional sports. The historic trophy is the perfect reward for this one-of-a-kind event.

The venue, Springdale Race Course, also is crucial to making the event unique. This is one of the foremost locations on the planet for racing and training thoroughbred race horses. The track is one of few in the world where no portion of the course is repeated, and where each of the fences is only jumped once. The great venue, combined with the lush local natural surroundings, make this event one you won't forget.

RAL: Take me through a day at the event.

NE: The the gates open at 9:00 am and our six races begin at 1:30 pm. These take place one after the other. We have a wide assortment of foods to sample, with a little something for every culinary taste. Libations and refreshments are available, plus you’ll find many speciality drinks that are made just for the race. You’ll find plenty of space to explore the grounds and socialize with the thousands of others in attendance.

RAL: What can attendees expect to find for local lodging?

NE: Due to the large crowd, finding lodging during the event can be difficult. You may need to check into lodging in the surrounding communities to find a open room. Our event website has some good local options.

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

NE: This event is huge for the community. It's a great place for people to reconnect or just to meet new people. The atmosphere is electric and everyone is dressed to impress.

The Carolina Cup has a massive effect on the local economy. With over 70,000 people entering the community, the local shops, hotels, restaurants and attractions see a major boost. In fact, it was calculated that the attendees of the Carolina Cup spend over $5 million locally. Each year we dontate the net profits to KershawHealth, the primary healthcare provider for Kershaw County and the surrounding areas.

RAL: Why should people come?

NE: The Carolina Cup is a special event, created by a unique group of people, supported by a  community steeped in tradition and held in a special place. Please join us again this year at Springdale Race Course to celebrate the 81st Carolina Cup.
