Stay Here
The North Shore conjures images of “outdoor living.” And while there’s plenty of that to be enjoyed here, much of the lodging provides comfort and even luxury without losing sight of their rustic surroundings. These are long-standing, family-operated establishments that grew from classic wilderness lodges into full-service resorts - an “up-North” experience, even from a Jacuzzi tub or a spa.

The North Shore is known for gorgeous wooded and lakeside scenery and the kind of seclusion that’s getting hard to find. Much of the terrain is carefully prepared and maintained for hikers, bikers and canoeing, and the stunning wildlife and landscapes are largely untouched - although towns like Ely, Grand Marais and Duluth are certainly welcome stops for culture and entertainment.

Dine Here
Not surprisingly, seafood is one of the staples of this area. Salmon and walleye are most common, along with seasonal Lake Superior freshwater fish selections - best enjoyed while overlooking the lake itself! And if fish is not your style, menus also include regional meat favorites (did someone suggest Swedish meatballs?). A tip: If you don’t know what lutefisk is, please ask before ordering!

How to Get Here
Duluth International Airport serves the entire North Shore region in collaboration with Northwest Airlines and Allegiant Air. If you are coming from the Twin Cities, I-35 N takes you straight up to Duluth; Highway 61 continues along Lake Superior’s coast. If you are coming through Wisconsin, take US-53 to I-535 and then toward MN-61.
Getting Around
To get around in the North Shore, a good way to start is by car on the scenic Highway 61, which takes you along the edge of Lake Superior. There is metro transit in the major cities like Duluth. But bring your bikes, canoes, skis or hiking boots - if you don’t get out on the trails or waterways, you’re missing a big part of what makes the North Shore legendary!
