This is the heart of Minnesota’s great Northwoods. The legend of Paul Bunyan has roots here, but the area’s rich history stems from the mining of iron ore as well as the lumber trade; some of the rivers and the area’s 465 lakes are the direct result of past mining activity. Today the Brainerd Lakes region is the official playground of Minnesota, with championship golf and carefully preserved forest land.

The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport serves the Brainerd Lakes region, with a Mesaba/Northwest airlink for transportation from the Twin Cities and Duluth International Airport. The city of Brainerd is located about 130 miles NNW of Minneapolis-St. Paul at the intersections of County Highway 18, Minnesota State Highway 371 and Minnesota State Highway 210.
