It’s hard to believe that Newport’s landmark hotel came from such humble beginnings, yet its name says it all. Complementing its former 19th-century mill exterior with surprisingly luxe and modern interiors, Mill Street Inn blends the best of old and new on your Rhode Island vacation.

The Mill Street Inn may be only one block from Thames Street dining and diversions, but there’s so much more to love about Newport’s Historic Hill neighborhood than its entertainment offerings. Enter the Mill Street Inn, with its townhouse, deluxe and junior suites that perfectly capture the spirit of this charming Rhode Island seaport. These authentic New England accommodations juxtapose original features like exposed brick walls and wood beams with modern comforts in the form of marble baths, king-sized feather beds and flat screen TVs. Many of the Mill Street Inn rooms boast incredible scenery, but for panoramic views of Newport only the rooftop patio will do. Keep watch over the ships that navigate Newport Harbor, or sit back and savor the colorful display offered by an East Coast sunset. Those looking to get a true taste of seaside life will adore the inn’s packages, which pair notable Newport sights with tasty temptations, including a tour of Breakers mansion topped off with dinner for two.

As the first mansion – and the only hotel – to be built on Rhode Island’s famed Cliff Walk, our No. 2 spot boasts a longstanding tradition of innovation. While it’s true that New England luxury accommodations like this come at a price, we found our stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk to be worth every penny.

More boutique hotel than inn, The Chanler at Cliff Walk gives modern-day visitors the opportunity to relive Newport’s Golden Age. Arrival via the inn’s circular driveway is duly impressive, while a step past its front doors reveals a Rhode Island accommodation that lives up to – and often exceeds – its reputation. Each room or suite boasts its own period-style décor, in keeping with the inn’s historic roots. Yet for all its European-style luxury, The Chanler maintains the intimate nature of a traditional New England Inn, with a humble 20 accommodations to its name. At The Chanler at Cliff Walk, beauty is truly in the details. Skylights, imported linens and hand-painted bath tiles are just a few exquisite details found inside your Chanler suite. Just beyond, the award-winning Spiced Pear tempts with its sophisticated American cuisine, while the inn’s manicured lawns and expertly-maintained gardens make for the perfect post-dinner stroll.

With a grand opening slated for the summer of 2010, our No. 4 pick found us in quite the predicament – one we cheerfully chose to ignore. The Ocean House’s prestigious past as a summer escape for well-to-do families of the day more than justifies its inclusion on our Top 10 list, even if its doors have yet to be opened.

With its current reincarnation rising up in the same vein, this Rhode Island hotel promises to satisfy even the most discerning of guests. Inside its stunning collection of guestrooms and suites, ice blue walls serve as a striking contrast to crisp white linens and headboards the exact color of crème brulee. En-suite baths feature dramatic dark wood vanities topped with finely-veined marble and soaking tubs surrounded with slabs of the same glistening gray. When the Ocean House finally unveils the much-anticipated final product, we think it’ll make for one delightful addition to Watch Hill’s hydrangea-lined streets and historic mansions. Putting its exquisite interiors aside for a moment, the Ocean House also occupies one of the most scenic beaches in all of New England. Windblown fences cut a path through the patches of sea grass and golden sands that make up Rhode Island’s trademark dunes. These windswept sands eventually give way to the deep blue expanses of the Atlantic Ocean, and the brightly colored sailboats and other vessels moored on its waters.

Our No. 5 pick proclaims itself to be the most luxurious bed and breakfast in all of Newport. The Francis Malbone House certainly has the history to back up such a bold statement, and we found its location in the midst of Newport’s harbor front to be nothing short of delightful. Suffice to say, we’re firm believers in this Rhode Island inn.

Built in 1760 for a wealthy shipping merchant, the Francis Malbone House maintains its colonial charms in the present day. A few tweaks through the ages have transformed this Rhode Island inn into an accommodation worthy of the 21st century, with its most recent expansion including the acquisition of the Benjamin Mason House, which hides an additional guestroom and suite beneath its equally charming exterior. Francis Malbone House’s guestrooms and suites feature Queen Anne four poster beds, private baths with Jacuzzis and countless antiques and period reproductions for that authentic Colonial feel. This Rhode Island inn even offers numerous common spaces, each appointed with fireplaces and plenty of reading material, to avoid that cramped feeling that so often plagues bed and breakfast accommodations.

Address

392 Thames St., Newport, RI 02840

Highlights

Every stay at the Francis Malbone House includes complimentary breakfasts, afternoon teas and homemade snacks.

Fun facts

In an attempt to avoid the King’s taxes, Colonel Francis Malbone (for which the modern-day Francis Malbone House was built) smuggled many of his mercantile goods using subterranean passages located below the mansion.

Despite its myriad charms, we thought it was only a matter of time until we grew tired of the Rhode Island seaside town better known as Newport. Fortunately, places like our No. 6 pick convinced us to put off such hasty conclusions. For this reason alone, the Pelham Court Hotel was more than deserving of our No. 6 spot.

We’re confident the Pelham Court Hotel will have a similar effect on even the most well-traveled of guests. Its all-suite accommodations can’t take all the credit, despite their admirable blend of modern luxuries (see: flat screen TVs and granite countertops) and romantic sensibilities. Surely this Rhode Island Inn’s unique brand of service – the amenities of a boutique hotel, the hands-on hospitality of an inn – has a great deal to do with its success. Top it off with an enviable address on Thames Street – the epicenter of Newport dining, shopping and nightlife– and you’ve got the quintessential Rhode Island inn. Intimate spaces like the Pelham Court Hotel’s courtyard, with its sparkling fountain and Old World statuaries, practically scream special occasion. Should your wedding planning bring you to this Newport hotel’s doors, you surely won’t be disappointed. Here, stunning backdrops and a staff with an eye for detail blend for one memorable big day!

Our No. 8 pick finds us in a place unlike any Rhode Island inn we’ve seen – which as it turns out, was precisely what its innkeepers intended. With its blooming gardens, Italian porticos and impossibly romantic ambience, The Villa at Westerly brings a touch of the Mediterranean to the New England coast.

Come summer, The Villa’s pool beckons with azure waters that reflect the coastal sunshine, while its in-ground hot tub proves equally appealing. Inside, inn rooms and suites that never fail to capture the hearts of the guests who frequent them promise to do the same for you and yours. The Rosa Maiorano Room lives up to its name with a color palette heavy on pink and a four poster bed that is the epitome of romantic. And rooms with names like “Roma” and “Verona” serve as further proof of this Rhode Island inn’s European inspirations. The Villa may take its cues from the Mediterranean, but the surrounding town of Westerly is quintessential Rhode Island. Nearby gourmet restaurants serve up seafood fresh from the Atlantic’s waters, yet still fall short of the inn’s own delectable breakfasts, served in the cozy confines of the dining room or in the secluded privacy of your Villa suite.

Address

190 Shore Rd., Westerly, RI 02891

Highlights

The Villa is a smoke-free Rhode Island accommodation.

Fun facts

The Villa is located at the meeting point of historic Westerly and Watch Hill, and offers convenient access to both Rhode Island destinations.

We’ve saved something special for the final spot on our Top 10 Rhode Island Inns and Boutique Hotels list. The only hotel on our list to hail from Block Island, the National Hotel is a real stunner; in fact, its expansive porch, white picket fence and green-shuttered exterior have even earned it a place in the National Register of Historic Places.

Mornings and afternoons are best spent on The National Hotel’s wraparound porch, with breathtaking views of Old Harbor offered from nearly every corner. Step inside the onsite restaurant, Tap and Grille, for scrumptious surf, turf or both. Traditional fish ‘n’ chips, award-winning clam chowder and the juiciest steaks this side of Block Island are just a few specialties served up at this Rhode Island eatery. With only a road separating The National Hotel’s rooms and suites from the glistening waters of the Atlantic, you could even take dinner to go as you depart on one of the island’s sunset boat cruises. We can’t envision a more scenic venue for your next Rhode Island meeting or event, and The National Hotel certainly has the service to suit any occasion. A traditional New England lobster bake makes a tasty addition to any event. Once friends, family and employees tuck into their plates piled high with boiled lobster, steamed mussels, corn on the cob and more, they’re sure to leave with smiling faces!
