Though the House of Hanover has long since ceased to have a “hand over” British government, its influence lives on in our No. 1 London pick. Georgian architecture, derived from the male monarchs’ shared name, is a product of the early 18th century and has luckily lived on into ours.

Flemings Mayfair Hotel complements its Georgian surroundings of Piccadilly with its own unique and tasteful interior design. Symmetry shines through the elegant paneled doors with a colorful half-moon window crowning the entrance to the fully-serviced apartments, and in the checkered headboards, artwork placement and arrangement of bed pillows in the hotel rooms. Ample space and windows create an airy and sunny environment where only contentment can abide. If you can leave the antique rose papered walls or the cream and blue hues of your serene suite, Flemings Mayfair’s high tea is a pleasure for your palate. When you’ve had your fill of clotted cream, scones and tea, mosey over to Piccadilly Circus. If the large TV screens, spouting fountains and iconic statue of the winged archer don’t inspire awe in you then we don’t know what will.

Gaudy flower print covers the curtains and plasters the pillows. Classic antique furnishings look more like your great granny’s hand-me-downs and the accompanying aromatherapy smells just as old. Luckily, our No. 10 pick knows the true definition of luxury, devoid of all the fuss and frill.

The Strand Palace Hotel suits the elegantly simple and simply elegant tastes of discriminating travelers. While you may see some flower print curtains, we assure you that Strand Palace keeps style in check. Fanciful touches such as lime green swivel chairs or a single work of art hanging upon the wall offer a distinguishing flair of character while giving way to the most important amenity, the soft mattress of your spacious bed. The chic urban design flows throughout right up to The Strand’s restaurant tables. If the saffron, cheery tomato and wild mushroom herb risotto from The Strand Carvery, a Johnston’s Brasserie King prawn salad with chili dressing or a Singapore Sling cocktail from Mask Bar don’t put a luxurious cap on your London day, we’re not sure what will!

There are many milestones throughout life: getting the lead in the school play, graduation, the first job, marriage, the birth of children and maybe even early retirement. But there is only one milestone you can experience again and again, and that’s our No. 2 spot.

The Milestone Hotel is five-star boutique hotel that lives up to the definition of luxury, and then goes beyond it. Marvel at the book-lined walls of the Park Lounge, the rich mahogany furniture of Cheneston’s restaurant and the vibrant details of your suite as you sip your glass of champagne on a tour given by the butler. Full red lips await you in the lobby of our No. 3 London Luxury Hotel. No, they don’t belong to your secret admirer; they are Salvador Dali-inspired. This curvy piece of modernist furniture not only smiles at you through the glass doors, but also invites you to take a seat.

Sanderson London is a visibly contemporary hotel and urban spa for art lovers or those seeking to experience a new style of accommodation. More like a museum than a lodging establishment, typical walls are replaced with layers of curtains and halls are dotted with single hanging pictures or a silky sitting chair with swans for armrests. You’ve heard of having eyes in the back of your head, but at Long Bar, individual eyes on the back of your high top stool keep a lookout while you sip your London libation. Go all the way to the top – the eighth floor Penthouse, that is. Taking up the entire floor and true to the dreamlike-ambiance evoked throughout, you’ll find hand-woven rugs of Filippino Lippi’s paintings, artwork on the ceiling and something more familiar: plasma TVs. Take your nightcap in the courtyard garden, amidst mosaics, blooming flowers and a reflecting pool.

You may have wanted to see Big Ben, but once you set foot in our No. 10 London luxury hotel, you will lose all track of time. Overlooking Hyde Park, and adorning itself with several flowering terraces, The Dorchester is an oasis of antique elegance and daring modern design.

Though the 1930s classical style and futuristic twist of modern styles don’t appear to be compatible, the Roof Suites exemplify the harmony that can be found in marrying the two. American walnut floors, living room walls upholstered in ivory silk, a crystal chandelier over the dining table and French doors curtained in Thailand gold silk are just a sampling of the Harlequin Suite’s exquisiteness. Equally tantalizing is The Dorchester Spa. Pass beneath the glow of a pearl chandelier into the Art Deco treatment rooms for a Rose Cocoon body treatment. As if The Dorchester could read your stomach – err, mind, The Dorchester’s onsite restaurants please cravings for worldwide fare. Alain Ducasse has won two Michelin stars for contemporary French cuisine like angus beef filet and seared foie gras Rossini.
