You press down on the gas to make the motor rev and growl like the lion inside you, waiting to devour that finish line. The checkered flag is raised…you hear the familiar words: ready, set, go! Your car leaps forward – only to be followed by flashing red and blue lights.
We won’t be the ones to condone or condemn drag racing, but we will offer our No. 1 U.S. Sporting Event Venue as a fix for those of you who have the need for speed. The Indy Motor Speedway brought racing into the spotlight with its opening in 1909. This 2.5-mile oval speedway is now the world’s largest and highest-capacity sporting facility. Though these reasons alone are enough for Indy’s spot as our coveted No. 1, there are still the races themselves.
We may not be chemists, but even we know that Formula One racing induces heart-pumping exhilaration. These matchstick-looking cars compete in the F1 World Championship through a series of Grand Prix races that put the stands on their feet. Fast four-wheel sport enthusiasts will also drool over the NASCAR Sprint Cup on Indy’s Brickyard 400 and one of the oldest motorsport events, the Indianapolis 500 itself.
