Camden Harbour Inn

Camden, Maine

View +1 (800) 236 - 4266

Our No. 5 spot is a short drive from the coastal town of Camden, but our No. 4 spot trumps that from its soaring perch atop a central Camden hill. For those looking to sample the finer things in life, Camden Harbour Inn offers everything from simple luxuries to lavish amenities on your coastal Maine vacation!

Camden Harbour Inn is simply overflowing with luxury, style and refined amenities, making this coastal Maine accommodation more of a boutique hotel than a traditional inn. And your gracious Camden Harbour Inn hosts wouldn’t settle for offering you any ordinary New England vacation. Instead, they’ve taken it upon themselves to execute complete lifestyle experiences tailored to your personal tastes. Vibrant floral displays, a sampling of local wines and even original artworks can all be placed in your already stylish Camden Harbour Inn suite. It was a close race, but Camden Harbour Inn easily offers the most spectacular scenery of all the Maine inns and bed and breakfasts on our list. Sure, there are the sweeping harbor and Penobscot Bay views you’d expect from a coastal inn, but Camden Harbour Inn also features breathtaking panoramas of the village, mountains and evergreen islands that flourish at the foot of this hilltop retreat.

Camden Harbour Inn rooms and suites include en-suite private baths and are furnished with king-size pillow-top beds, the finest linens, fluffy towels and soft bathrobes. The inn is also the only lodging establishment in Maine to offer in-room mini bars.

Our No. 5 spot has received its fair share of recognition, including the honor of becoming the seaside town of Belfast’s first – and only – bed and breakfast to be awarded a prestigious AAA Four-Diamond designation. It may seem silly, but we simply couldn’t pass up the chance to heap a few praises of our own upon this coastal Maine inn!

Belfast Bay Inn is also one of few coastal Maine accommodations to boast a place among the distinguished ranks of the Select Registry Boutique Hotel list. But what we most admire about this Belfast bed and breakfast is its innkeepers’ genius decision to take up residence in a pair of 19th-century rowhouses and transform them into luxury suites surrounded by Belfast’s quaint shops and boutiques. And this Maine inn’s convenient Main Street address puts you a short stroll from Belfast Harbor’s waterfront, while Camden and Acadia National Park are both a scenic drive away! We think Belfast Bay Inn’s boutique-style ambiance is perfect for special occasions and long weekends on the New England coast. Tulips border the brick-lined sidewalks and streets of Shoreline Park and the inn’s garden courtyard is the perfect place to curl up with a cup of tea and that book you’re desperate to crack open. Slip on a soft terrycloth robe in the comfort of your Belfast Bay suite and sit back as skilled hands gently massage away every last trace of stress away!

Fun facts

Belfast Bay’s innkeepers, Ed and Judy Hemmingsen, are no strangers to the travel business. They built the Bluenose Inn, a 97-room luxury hotel in Bar Harbor, before moving to Belfast and opening Belfast Bay’s doors.

The Admiral's Inn Resort

Ogunquit, Maine

View +1 (207) 646 - 7093

By definition, an admiral boasts the highest ranking among his or her peers, and we can’t imagine a more fitting description of our No. 6 pick, Admiral’s Inn Resort. This Ogunquit original is a commanding presence on Maine’s coast and an admirable destination for your coastal Maine vacation!

While this coastal Maine inn is already decorated in authentic New England style, we’d like to pin a few more stars – four, to be precise – to its metaphorical chest. Admiral Inn Resort’s all-new amenities, including two heated pools and two hot tubs, could easily take all four. The extensive treatment menu – Swedish and deep tissue massages, hydrating facials and aromatherapy cocoons, to name a few – offered by its day spa, Body Mechanix, could easily merit the addition of even more stars. But we’d rather save them all for the inn’s crowning glory: it’s designation as Ogunquit’s only true full-service resort and inn! While it certainly wouldn’t be as prestigious, perhaps a three-star salute would be more fitting for this coastal Maine accommodation. Not that the Admiral’s Inn isn’t deserving of a full four stars; it’s just that this modest inn is actually three separate properties in one central Ogunquit location! There’s the original inn, with its traditional bed and breakfast-style rooms. There’s the White Rose Inn, acquired in 2008 and added to the Admiral Inn’s selections. And the inn’s most recent addition: a stunning coastal Maine hotel with spacious rooms and access to all the Admiral’s resort-style amenities!

You’ll find plenty to fill your days in Ogunquit, including shopping and dining in the Ogunquit Village Center, sunbathing on Ogunquit Beach and the quaint fishing community of nearby Perkins Cove

Fun facts

Originally called the Playhouse Inn, followed by the Post Road Inn, the Admiral's Inn is Ogunquit's oldest bed and breakfast and has been operating as an inn for nearly 50 years!

The Kennebunkport Inn

Kennebunkport, Maine

View +1 (800) 248 - 2621

Those in the real estate business are fond of saying that everything boils down to one – er, three – things: location, location and location. If that’s true, then our No. 7 pick has cornered the market on coastal Maine destinations. The Kennebunkport Inn is the only accommodation in this coastal city’s famous Dock Square, after all!

The Kennebunkport Inn’s central location means that shopping, dining and attractions galore are all just minutes from your door! Dock Square is known for more than just its spectacular coastal scenery; art galleries, museums and one-of-a-kind boutiques all line this landmark’s streets. Just beyond these earthly pleasures, you’ll find a wide array of aquatic pursuits like fishing, sailing and whale watching on the Atlantic Ocean’s deep blue waters. The Kennebunkport Inn even lets you choose the lodging that suits you, from the classic sophistication of the Main Inn to the breezy cottage-style rooms offered in the Wharfside Building. We’d suggest working up an appetite for the inn’s newly-opened One Dock restaurant. This versatile Maine dining space alternates as a lively piano bar by night, while its patio offers al fresco dining under the starry coastal Maine sky. One Dock’s signature cocktails and Kennebunk River views accompany whichever dining experience you choose!

The Kennebunkport Inn’s onsite restaurant, One Dock, offers traditional coastal Maine dishes like baked haddock and steamed lobster, along with its signature fusion dishes that pair fresh seafood with Asian and Spanish flavors.

Newagen Seaside Inn

Newagen, Maine

View Website +1 (866) 980 - 9643

There’s only way to sum up the sea salt-tinged air, rocky cliffs and vast ocean waters that surround our No. 8 spot: quintessential coastal Maine. From its shuttered Colonial Revival exterior to the charming interiors of its seaside cottages, Newagen Seaside Inn is the definition of New England coastal chic.

Much of the credit for Newagen Seaside Inn’s breathtaking accommodations undoubtedly goes to its prime location. Not only does this quaint Maine inn boast a Boothbay Harbor address, it’s also perched on the very tip of scenic Southport Island. But don’t think for a minute that we’d forget to give Newagen’s innkeepers their dues. The scenery outside may come courtesy of Mother Nature, but Newagen Seaside Inn’s immaculate guestrooms and cottages didn’t decorate themselves! Hardwood floors, hand-stitched quilts and walls awash in coastal-inspired colors blend for a calming effect in these well-appointed Maine accommodations. If Newagen Seaside Inn’s sunny interiors aren’t enough to motivate you, we think a breakfast with a view is just what the doctor – er, innkeeper – ordered. Specialty dishes like blueberry French toast and chocolate chip pancakes are a delightful addition to breakfast staples like freshly-prepared pastries, juice and eggs. And the spectacular Atlantic Ocean views framed by the dining room’s expansive windows make every meal as scenic as it is delicious!

Newagen Seaside Inn is the ideal location for your Maine destination wedding. This coastal Maine inn boasts 20 acres of oceanfront property for spectacular outdoor ceremonies, receptions and more!

Rocktide Inn

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

View +1 (207) 633 - 4455

Our No. 9 pick may not be the first coastal Maine inn to hail from scenic Boothbay Harbor, but it does offer some of the most spectacular views of this beloved body of water! We simply can’t imagine a finer location for your coastal Maine vacation than surrounded by Rocktide Inn’s cozy accommodations and the sea’s calming presence.

If the friendly faces of Boothbay Harbor residents are any indication, warm welcomes come standard in coastal Maine. Rocktide’s innkeepers are eager to share whimsical touches like museum-worthy model ships and a miniature train that winds its way around the inn’s dining room. But don’t waste all your time holed up in the comfort of this coastal Maine inn! Outside, boat tours depart straight from the inn’s docks, while historic trolley rides take you into the heart of Boothbay’s shops, galleries and quaint charm. On the rocks may have once been a grim reality for shipwrecked fisherman, but the On the Rocks lounge comes with none of the same negative connotations. Playful thatched roofs are the only hints of deserted islands you’ll find inside this sleek lounge space. And we certainly can’t fault you if every breakfast, lunch and dinner finds you stranded inside Rocktide Restaurant’s elegant dining space. After all, we had our fair share of Rocktide Inn’s tender roast beef, juicy steaks and fresh seafood dishes during our stay!

Brown's Wharf Inn

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

View +1 (207) 380 - 6111

It may be the final pick on our list, but don’t write off Brown’s Wharf Inn as your everyday East Coast inn. If the oversized statue of an old lobster fisherman – complete with equally enormous yellow rain slicker – that welcomes you into this coastal Maine inn is any indication, you’re in for a Maine vacation of grand proportions!

Brown’s Wharf Inn’s modest New England-style exterior belies the surprisingly spacious and luxurious rooms harbored beneath its roof. Flat screen TVs, wireless Internet and private decks with panoramic views of the sail boats and other craft moored in Boothbay Harbor all come standard at this coastal Maine inn. Brown’s Wharf even offers budget-conscious efficiencies for those who prefer to spend the majority of their Maine vacation on water rather than land. The Old Salt Shed Lounge, which takes its name from its former use as – what else – a salt storage shed, is a must on any Maine vacation. This historic Boothbay Harbor eatery is famous for its succulent seafood dinners, so you’d be wise to reserve your space well in advance. You may have to fight through the local crowd to take your seat, but when a Maine lobster – straight off the fisherman’s boats and dripping with butter – graces your plate, it somehow seems worth it!

Fun facts

Spruce Point Inn

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

View +1 (207) 633 - 4152

Its name may hint at blue-hued spruce and prickly pine needles, but our No. 11 pick actually sits high atop a peninsula that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean’s watery expanses. We hope you’re ready for a change of scenery on your coastal Maine vacation, because that’s precisely what awaits you at the Spruce Point Inn!

Here at the Spruce Point Inn, the smoggy cityscape that once served as your backyard has been replaced with coastal Maine’s craggy cliffs, sparkling waters and dense forests. Your nosy neighbors have been transformed into burly fisherman hauling in their catches and spiny sea critters turned to-die-for dinners when smothered with butter. And in place of your everyday soundtrack of honking cars, ringing cell phones and overbearing bosses, you’ll find the sweet melodies of birdsong and the gentle lapping of Boothbay Harbor’s waves. Chances are you’re looking for more than a change of scenery on your coastal Maine vacation, but Spruce Point Inn is our recommended destination for any reason and in every season. Family vacations could use a little sprucing up in our opinion, and there’s nothing like a little New England flair and a gentle sea breeze to put that spring back in the step of kids and parents alike!

The Spruce Point Inn’s fun-filled summer children’s program, The Lighthouse Camp, is the perfect supplement to coastal Maine family vacations.

You’ll find plenty of admirable choices on our Top Coastal Maine Inn and Bed and Breakfasts list, but for a true New England experience at the water’s edge, the aptly-named Inn at Ocean’s Edge is our hands-down selection!

For once, we don’t even care if you doubt our judgment – that would only mean more room for us at this delightful Maine inn, after all. In fact, we’ve got half a mind to forsake this entire list in favor of time better spent lounging in the sparkling infinity-edge pool, strolling the vast blooming gardens or indulging in a second helping at the Inn at Ocean’s Edge’s award-winning restaurant. But we’ll take pity on your poor seafaring soul and let you in on this coastal Maine inn’s best-kept secret: a scrumptious breakfast buffet overlooking Penobscot Bay. Lobster boats cruise past, loaded down with their morning catch – soon to be your dinner – as they take their place in the peaceful harbor. Over on Lincolnville Beach, tiny toddlers with shovel and pail in hand leave their mark on the soft golden sands. And across the bay, Islesboro beckons with a full day of shopping, wine tasting and exploration on its rocky shores!
