We first admired our No. 5 spot for its decidedly cosmopolitan take on typical Napa Valley accommodations. But when we discovered that Solage Calistoga was not only one of the valley’s most stylish resorts, but also it’s most eco-friendly, we knew we’d found a resort deserving of its California wine country surroundings!

It’s rare to witness natural beauty these days – especially in California – so when we first stepped onto Solage Calistoga’s impeccable grounds, we had to take a second to admire the scenery. Outside, ancient oak trees and majestic Palisade Mountain peaks are a striking complement to the resort’s urban sophistication. Inside, an inspired color palette of olive greens and chocolate hues blends with locally-sourced materials like pebbled floors and warm wood furnishings. It’s hard to tell where the vineyard-dotted valley ends and the understated luxury of your Solage Calistoga suite begins! This is California wine country, so don’t waste too much time taking in the view. And you definitely won’t want to miss an opportunity to tour Napa Valley’s sights and attractions, especially with one of Solage Calistoga’s earth-friendly cruiser bicycles at your disposal. But a sweat won’t be the only thing you’ll work up on your wine country tour, and Solage’s award-wining Solbar restaurant is more than willing to oblige your post-exercise cravings with its signature organic cuisine.

Highlights

Solbar’s Meet the Maker dinners give local vineyard proprietors an opportunity to showcase their talents, while giving you a chance to sample the fruits of their labors.

There’s so much to see, taste and discover in Napa Valley, we can’t imagine a more fitting – or luxurious – beginning to your wine country vacation than a four-hour tour of Napa’s best. We wish we could take credit, but we’ll have to defer to the masterminds behind Napa Valley Lodge’s V.I.P package. This whirlwind winery tour includes the plush comfort of a luxury vehicle, but the V.I.P treatment doesn’t end when the key leaves the ignition. You’ll also be treated to an en-suite champagne breakfast each morning, turndown service each evening and the plush comfort of Napa Valley Lodge’s newly-renovated deluxe rooms – complete with a view of the surrounding vineyard! If you have some very important people of your own to impress, you won’t find a more striking destination than Napa Valley Lodge. We’re tempted to call our No. 7 pick the poor man’s Provence, but we’re afraid our well-intentioned nickname will be mistaken for an insult by some. So instead, we’ll say this: For the charm of Provence paired with unparalleled luxury at an affordable price, Bel Abri is our hands-down selection!

Our No. 7 pick translates to “beautiful shelter,” and we can’t think of a name more befitting a bed and breakfast tucked under Napa’s wing. Bel Abri’s hand-crafted furniture, ornate chandeliers and French tapestries may lend it the feel of a French chateau, but the scenery outside can’t be mistaken for anything other than California wine country. And inside your Bel Abri suite, you may be overcome with the urge to close the plantation shutters and draw a heavenly-scented bath, but don’t panic. This Napa Valley inn’s deep soaking tubs and imported bath products had a similar effect on us! Bel Abri may thoughtfully provide the morning fare, but that still leaves you with plenty of opportunity at lunch, dinner or both to sample the first-class offerings at St. Helena’s Culinary Institute of America. You could settle for a tour of CIA’s private vineyards and exquisite gardens, but we recommend reserving a table – and some room in your stomach – for its Greystone Restaurant.

Highlights

Napa Valley Wine Train offers scenic brunch, lunch and dinner tours though California’s premier wine country region.

Getting there

From Hwy. 29, exit at First Street in Napa. Turn right at the end of the exit. Turn right at the first light (California Boulevard) and proceed south for one block to Second Street. Turn right onto Second Street. Bel Abri is on the corner of California Boulevard and Second Street.

Below average rainfall and abundant sunshine have earned Napa Valley a reputation as one of the world’s leading wine growing regions, but we think its these same conditions that make Napa the perfect destination for your special occasion. Napa Valley brings the weather, the adventure, and of course, the wine. All that’s missing is the romance – unless your California vacation includes a stay at our No. 8 spot, Candlelight Inn. As its name suggests, our No. 9 pick offers you both a river and a terrace on your Napa Valley vacation. But what it fails to mention is that the river it promises is actually Napa’s own, the Napa River, and the aforementioned balcony overlooks the radiant splendor of the river waters and the valley’s finest vineyards!

Village side suites are a testament to Napa Valley’s astounding beauty. There’s a fair dose of luxury, with flat screen TVs, oversized whirlpool tubs and plush goose-down Napa Dream Bedding feathered in many of River Terrace Inn’s rooms. But what really drew us in was the inn’s elegant yet casual country manor-style décor. Rich chocolates, harvest golds and earthy muslin hues pay tribute to Napa Valley’s breathtaking beauty, particularly in early fall. Speaking of autumn, there’s no greater time to pack your suitcase for a wine country getaway than during Napa Valley’s extraordinary harvest season. Come September, the grapes are plump and ready to be plucked from the vines, and you’ll be just in time to see this spectacular display. River Terrace Inn’s exclusive Harvest Special package even lets you learn the art of winemaking from some of the industry’s leading artisans!

Highlights

River Terrace Inn offers a complete menu of in-room spa treatments, including massage, facials, nail treatments, body therapy and hydrotherapy.

Napa may be home to some of California’s, if not the world’s, finest vineyards, but we think it’s high time for its wine country counterpart – Sonoma County – to share in the glory. For those looking to live the beautiful life in California’s other wine country, our final pick – Bella Villa Messina – is up to the task!

We think there’s more to love about Sonoma County than its wines – delicious, full-bodied vintages, though they may be. You see, the fun doesn’t end where the vineyards meet the horizon. In fact, some would say the adventure is merely beginning when acres of vine-covered soil gives way to Sonoma’s famed geyser country – all visible from Bella Villa Messina’s sprawling estate. And the viewing doesn’t get much finer than from the French Room, a European-inspired suite with a private deck that overlooks Geyser Peak and the Alexander Valley! With more than 50 wineries tucked into the hills that surround Bella Villa Messina, you’re in for more than a pretty view on your Napa Valley vacation. You’ll find it’s never been easier to breeze through the day than with a glass of vino blanc in one hand and a knowledgeable guide leading the way. There’s never been a better reason to wake up each morning than the inn’s delicious gourmet breakfast. And there’s never been a more luxurious and hospitable place to stay in Sonoma County than Bella Villa Messina!
