It’s perhaps the symbol of Banff resorts. And with good reason: the Fairmont Banff Springs, a.k.a. “The Castle in the Rockies,” has been rising out of this forested Banff valley since 1888. It also set the standard for luxury Banff vacations, and not surprisingly it ranks No. 1 on our list.
We also thought it was cool that the resort that was perhaps the original Banff vacation experience has a new set of offerings known as “Original Experiences.” These are sort of like Banff vacation packages, but they all have a fun, modern twist. The Tees to Greens Clinic, for example, combines golf on the Fairmont Springs Golf Course with lawn care. Extreme Entertainment covers wine and drink mixology with the latest trends and techniques in party-throwing. There’s also a culinary experience for kids, a photography package and Golf the Original Way, which celebrates the history of the Fairmont and of golf itself. This all takes place in one of the world’s great resort environments – the grand, exquisite castle hotel of the Fairmont Banff Springs.
It wouldn’t be a luxury Banff getaway without a luxury spa, and Fairmont Banff Springs features the Willow Stream Spa that draws from the surrounding mountains and the area’s famous natural mineral hot springs.

It turns out that rundle rock is a prized flat stone used for decorating that can only be found in the Canadian Rockies. We didn’t know that, but having seen it we can understand its appeal. And having seen the Rundlestone Lodge, we’re pretty sure we’ve seen it put to its finest use.
It isn’t just the interior and exterior décor that rates this lodge in our Top 10. It’s the combination of bistro dining, a 45-ft. lap pool, an exercise facility and gorgeous whirlpool, plus the 96 well-appointed rooms and suites that got our attention. The open fireplace in the lobby is certainly a warm welcome! Mostly, though, it’s the fact that Rundlestone Lodge makes your Banff vacation as easy and carefree as it is rejuvenating. There’s complimentary heated underground parking, plus wireless Internet throughout the lodge; most of the rooms have DVD players, and options on Deluxe Suites include Jacuzzi tubs, woodburning fireplaces and lofts. It lets you bond with your Banff vacation as easily as the hotel’s décor bonds with the surrounding Canadian Rockies.
