For quite awhile now, Virginia has claimed that “Virginia is for Lovers.” So we naturally assumed that it would be a great state for weddings. Boy, were we right. Its very impressive background in American history - beginning well before the birth of the U.S. and including the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Pocahontas - has given it a heritage that lives on in many of its resorts. For a wedding that lasts forever, you can’t beat a celebration at a resort that’s been around for centuries. Here are our Top 10 Virginia Wedding Resorts!

Surrounded by the lofty Alleghenies and brimming with historic charm, you won’t find a more sophisticated space for sharing your special day with family and friends than The Homestead in Hot Springs.

We can’t imagine a better way to begin your life together than in the company of one of Virginia’s most celebrated mountain resorts. Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center opened in 1728, and has been refining its colonial elegance ever since. Which means that today, you can hold your spectacular Virginia wedding at a place that certainly has stood the test of time. Metaphorical, isn’t it?

Actually, metaphors aren’t needed much at Berry Hill - reality is breathtaking enough. It’s hard to wrap your mind around what it means to stand in a structure that’s been here for almost 300 years. This used to be a 105,000-acre plantation, and it still looks like one today; the main building is a carefully-restored Greek revival mansion built in 1842, when Berry Hill was already well over a century old. Besides the obvious - and numerous - spectacular indoor and outdoor settings for your wedding, Berry Hill Resort offers a complete staff for planning, food and beverages and more. That’s not to mention the complete range of services and bridal packages at the exquisite Blackberry Spa, right onsite at Berry Hill. It’s the most modern, historical Virginia wedding you can imagine.

Highlights

For weddings and receptions, there’s nothing more romantic than the Grand Ballroom at Berry Hill. And there’s no more valued tradition than weekend buffet breakfast, served right here in the ballroom to start a magical day.

Getting there

From Richmond, VA, take I-64 West to the Powhite Parkway South (Rte 76) Exit onto Route 288 and continue to the Hull Street, Route 360 West exit. Take Route 360 West all the way to South Boston. Approximately eight miles north of South Boston, you come to a traffic light. Go through this light and continue six miles to the next light, which is Hamilton Boulevard. Turn right and continue two miles to the second light, which is Hwy 501. Turn right onto Hwy 501 North and continue two miles to the third traffic light. Turn left onto Green’s Folly Road (Hwy 654). Continue straight for 2.1 miles (Hwy 654 turns into 659) until you reach River Road on your right. Turn right and continue for one mile to The Berry Hill Estate, on the left at 3105 River Road.

Related Onsite Offerings

Berry Hill features an indoor pool, men’s and women’s saunas, a fitness center, tennis courts, complimentary bikes and five miles of biking trails, fishing in the stocked pond and equipment for a variety of outdoor games including horseshoes, croquet, bocce and more.

It’s on a mountain. There’s also a lake. But at Mountain Lake Resort, there’s a whole lot more to your SW Virginia wedding. More than 2,600 acres, in fact, where you’ll find fun in the woods, fun at the resort-style pool and game facilities and comfort in the grand, historic hotel.

Its refurbished Virginia Country style still blends with the original aura of the grand hotel, and inside are ten types of rooms for a variety of Virginia getaways. But if you were expecting stuffy, old-fashioned surroundings, consider that all around the hotel are modern facilities including a hot tub, tennis and volleyball courts, croquet and badminton lawns, and even facilities for archery and nine-hole disc golf. You’ll also find a 16-unit lodge, along with an array of private one- to four-bedroom cottages and duplex units for summer or winter.

Highlights

The landmark Stone Hotel offers more than 5,800 square feet of indoor function space, equipment and wireless Internet, along with the 1,500-square-foot Executive Retreat Center.

Mountain Lake Lodge was featured in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, and offers themed Dirty Dancing weekends with tours, contests, dance lessons and more.
