If you’ve seen the movie “Tin Cup,” you’ve seen the golf course at Tubac Golf Resort and Spa. Except that in 1996, when Kevin Costner roamed the Rancho Nine, it was only an 18-hole course; today, it’s 27 holes of world-class Tucson area golf.

The Anza Nine was added in 2006, and provides a little extra bite to the Tucson scenery - terrific for those mysterious people who seem to know how to navigate a tough par three with an island green. The original Otero Nine features a shortened ninth hole that’s now a par four - the problem is that the designers chose to leave the huge lake in place, which makes reaching the green rather an interesting proposition. The accommodations at Tubac Golf Resort and Spa are pure Tucson area Southwestern splendor - beehive fireplaces, red tile roofs, brick archways, and more. The resort also features tennis courts, spa and fitness center, and a heated outdoor swimming pool.

The hacienda-style spa at Tubac Golf Resort and Spa highlights the Santa Rita and Tumacacori Mountain ranges with 4,000 square feet of space and indigenous regional treatments. Amenities include men’s and women’s changing areas with saunas and eucalyptus steam rooms and an outdoor whirlpool tub.

Getting there

From Tucson International Airport, turn left on Valencia Blvd. and go three miles to I-19 South. Stay on I-19 for 33 miles to Exit 40 (Chavez Siding) and follow the signs to Tubac. Turn left at the arch.

Lots of people, ourselves included, tend to think of “golf” and “Scottsdale” in the same breath. It’s well-known that this area is a terrific golf destination. When it comes to Arizona golf resorts, you shouldn’t argue with one that’s been here since 1913, the year after Arizona became a US state. Along with its legendary Arizona luxury, San Marcos also has the distinction of having the state’s first golf course with - get this - grass greens.

It turns out that the resort is as old as Arizona and its town of Chandler. The 18-hole, 6,626-yard golf course opened in 1913, and shortly thereafter sported Arizona’s first Bermuda grass greens. Today, it’s a counterpoint to many of the state’s desert golf layouts, which can tend to be as harsh as the environment for the non-championship player and - thanks to its tall salt cedar trees - those who just don’t care for the heat. This also makes it extra-beautiful for events and tournaments. The Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and even following an extensive expansion and renovation in 1986 that brought it to 295 guest rooms, still glows with its original California mission style.

Getting there

From Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, take Interstate 10 East (towards Tucson) and exit onto Loop 202 East/Pecos Road. Travel East on Loop 202 and exit on Arizona Avenue. Turn left on Arizona Avenue; traveling north until you reach Buffalo Street. Turn left onto Buffalo Street. The Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort will be on the left.

Fun facts

Though the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort was originally designed by architect Arthur Bennett Burton, the great Frank Lloyd Wright - a close friend of the original owner, Dr. Alexander Chandler, for whom the town is named - was closely involved in its development.

Talk about traditional - this Arizona luxury golf resort was once an orange grove. That gives its 18-hole beauty an extra-lush, green quality that belies its Scottsdale, AZ surroundings. It’s a traditional, parkland-style layout that refreshes even as it challenges.

You’ll find plenty of both on this course. Up-and-downs are not recommended here. You don’t get a par 3 until the fourth hole - but the par 3s are spectacular, and will test your club selection skills. Also, many of the holes have dastardly bunkers on both sides of the fairway; or else, they’re guarding the greens. Challenging? Yes. Relaxing? Depends upon who you are. The 160 suites at Orange Tree Golf Resort provide plenty of relaxation, however, and all of it amid classic Southwestern style. Especially if you opt for the in-room Trefoil spa treatments - try the 60- or 90-minute Orange Tree Massage, the signature treatment at Orange Tree Golf Resort. After a day of exquisite golf, it’s the perfect way to unwind!

Highlights

All of the resort’s 160 Scottsdale suites feature two-person whirlpool tubs, private decks and 740 square feet of space.

Getting there

From Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, follow the sign for SR 51 (Squaw Peak Expressway). Proceed north on the SR 51 for approximately 13 miles taking the Shea Blvd. exit.
