For instance, you might’ve heard it referred to as The Best Bloomin’ City in Canada, because it has the mildest climate in all of Canada – perfect for year-round blossoming. It’s also call The Garden City because it is home to the world-renowned Butcharts Gardens. And we can’t forget the Inner Harbour, considered to be one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. It’s typical of topnotch luxury hotels to have heavenly accommodations, sought-after spa treatments and cuisine that’ll leave you salivating for more even when your buttons are about to burst. It’s not so typical to be recognized as the No.1 hotel in an entire country – like Hotel Grand Pacific.

Voted Best Hotel in Canada by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine in 2008, this Victoria hotel situated on the banks of the Inner Harbour obviously knows how to treat everyone who walks into its chandelier-festooned lobby right. It treated us right – that’s for sure. Bejeweled like a British royal herself, the Fairmont Empress is your place to take a step back in time and relive the events of yesteryear – when Edward, Prince of Wales waltzed within the hotel’s Crystal Ballroom nearly 100 years ago, and afternoon tea was a daily dalliance everyone took part in.

Built in 1908, this Victoria jewel has aged very nicely – especially with the help of two restorations – one that saved it from becoming a modern high-rise hotel and the other that added a health club, pool and reception area. A perfect relic of the Edwardian era, the Empress not only looks regal, but has actually played host to kings and queens, as well as iconic movie stars like the dimpled Shirley Temple and Katherine Hepburn. After a cool refreshment in the cigar and brandy room-inspired Bengal Room, you may want to continue your relaxation with a Thermal Mineral Bath at the onsite Willow Stream Spa. Or gaze at the rippling harbor waters from the veranda. We especially thought that the Fairmont Gold treatment was a nice added touch for those searching out the ultimate respite. An exclusive lounge with an honor bar and complimentary hors d'oeuvres sure can help you relax!

Highlights

The Fairmont Empress hosts a daily afternoon tea, frequented by more than 800 people a day. It’s a must-do on your Victoria getaway!

Fun facts

Previous guests of the Fairmont Empress have had ghostly encounters at the hotel, including a 20th century maid spotted on the sixth floor.

Getting there

From the Victoria International Airport, go south on Hwy. 17/Blanshard Street. Turn right on Belleville Street and drive two blocks. Turn right on Government Street and the Fairmont Empress will be up ahead.

Do you want to vacation for a weekend? How about a week? Or maybe the entire winter? At Huntingdon Hotel and Suites, you can stay for as long as you’d like – it has packages for that! And we know once you get to this Belleville Park hotel, you’ll want to take advantage of the extended stay deals!

Modernly chic yet built to emulate the late 19th-century Canadian Pacific hotels dotting British Columbia’s capital city, the Huntingdon has deep roots for being built less than 30 years ago. It takes its name from an olden town in England – home to the famed Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell. Not so historic - but just as delightful as an English bed and breakfast - are the hotel’s rooms and suites with names like The Buckingham and The Nottingham Suite. English traditions are played up at the property’s Gatsby Mansion Restaurant and Hunter’s Club Bar and Grille, where you can take in a spot of tea and a scone. And the Inner Harbour, considered one of the most beautiful harbors in the world, is right outside, waiting to be explored by ferry or just to serve as a stunning backdrop on your Canadian getaway.

Highlights

Get in touch with your inner Zen with an ancient Japenese Reiki massage at the onsite Belleville Park Spa.

Getting there

Huntingdon Hotel and Suites is across the street from U.S. Ferries on Quebec Street and five minutes from Helijet, Harbour and Kenmore Air.

We knew that any place that has something called Vinotherapy was going to be a favorite of ours. And we’re pretty confident that you’ll like – heck, love! – it too once you’ve been to Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa. This five-star oceanfront resort is just outside of Victoria in British Columbia’s wine country.

A massage with wine grape-infused oils. A freshly-crushed grape seed and wine bath. Even a grape-stomping pedicure! You don’t have to be a wino to love this place – in fact, you don’t even have to like vino. These signature spa treatments are just one testament of Brentwood Bay’s connection to its surrounding Vancouver Island elements. You’ll get the idea pretty quickly when you walk into your OceanSuite, illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Saanich Inlet. Or, taste fresh, seasonal cuisine paired with the area’s best cellar picks at the SeaGrille and Pub. We know it will be tempting to hole up in your suite, perhaps under your ultra-soft Italian linens, but we urge you to experience the island from beyond the other side of Brentwood Bay’s lobby doors. And its Eco-Adventure Centre is your way of doing that. Kayak, SCUBA dive and take part in a variety of eco-tours.

Related Onsite Offerings

If you want to be impressed, stay at any of the myriad of hotels along the Inner Harbour. If you want to be utterly blown away by the raw beauty of British Columbia, then stay at The Aerie. While kids are always welcome, we suggest a couples vacation to this Vancouver Island heaven on earth.

Intimacy oozes from The Aerie. The location, the rooms, the spa – even the cooking classes are meant to make you feel sheltered from life’s inevitable chaos. The resort looms above the lush Cowichan Valley and Sannich Inlet, offering striking 180-degree views visible from all of the resort buildings. While the oversized and sumptuously-appointed guestrooms and suites are perfect for pairs, the Villa Cielo is admittedly the resort’s most glamorous gem. Sitting on the highest point of the property, this six-bedroom villa offers unparalleled Gulf Island and Olympic Peninsula vistas – not to mention 32-ft. ceilings, Brazilian cherry hardwood floors and silk carpets. The accommodations are something to marvel at, but so are the resort’s unique activities. Like the Great Fall Mushroom Hunt. You can search for delicious wild fungi and then bring your finds back to the resort to be made into a delicacy just for you.

The Chateau Victoria Hotel and Suites may look like a white high rise condo you’d see lining Florida’s coastline, but you’d be sadly mistaken to write it off as a generic hotel not worth your time. One step outdoors to the bubbling fountain and you’ll know that history plays an important role here.

Immortalized in bronze and welcoming you to the hotel is Chateau Victoria’s original owner, Mr. Clive Piercy and his dog, Shaker. These statues are a testament to the hotel’s mission to honor its humble beginnings in the 1960s and its journey throughout the decades as a prominent Victoria hotel. Although the hotel is not directly on the Inner Harbour, you’ll be amazed at what you can see from your room’s balcony. Beacon Hill Park, the Olympic Mountain range, the Strait of Georgia, Inner Harbour and the Sooke Hills to be exact. Before heading up to Vista 18 – Victoria's only rooftop restaurant – take time to enjoy the elegant, mirrored lounge decorated with period furniture and a grand piano. And for a daylong adventure, get out and about and visit the Victoria Conference Center and neighboring downtown attractions.

Fun facts

The land on which the property stands was the former estate of a parrot named Louis and his owner. He lived to be 115 years old!

The Oswego Hotel could be a poster child for boutique hotels. Ultra-sleek yet comfy like home, this contemporary West Coast-inspired hotel is set in the residential neighborhood of James Bay, only two blocks from the Inner Harbour. If you value the intimate details in life, this is your place.

Your stay at The Oswego begins with a trip to the infused water station. Pour yourself a refreshing glass of water infused with a variety of fresh ingredients, like strawberry mint and cucumber lemongrass. Next, head to your room and take a midday nap on atop fluffy comforters. We’ll warn you, though; it may be hard to tear your eyes away from the glorious views of the regal Legislature domes and the Olympic Mountains out your oversized windows and from the sprawling, furnished balcony of your Penthouse Suite. With its proximity to downtown, you may have a tough time deciding how to spend your afternoon. Try antiquing on Fort Street, a tour of the world-class Royal BC Museum – or both! One thing’s for sure, though. A rhubarb strawberry tart matched with vanilla bean ice cream from the O Bistro and a muddled elixir is the perfect ending to an adventurous day!
