North Carolina has long been a spa destination, beginning as early as the 19th century. Granted, the concept was a bit more primitive back then (think hot springs soaks in wooden barrels), but it all started a tradition of spectacular spa resorts that continues today. Steam treatments mimic early morning mountain fogs, while the massaging jets of mineral water baths capture the rushing cascades of the Land of Waterfalls. You’ll find everything you need for total body bliss on our list of Top 10 North Carolina Spa Resorts!

Embrace elegance and old world charm as you experience true Southern hospitality at Pinehurst’s full-service spa in the North Carolina Sandhills. The resort is best known as a world-class golf destination, but we feel it’s the Spa at Pinehurst’s Southern-inspired services that deserve a second glance.

Pine, magnolia and other Southern extracts delight the senses and rejuvenate the body in the spa’s signatures, including the Carolina Peach Nourisher, which gently polishes with peach and pecan scrub to reveal fresh, hydrated skin. Surrender to a single spa service or indulge in a full day’s worth with one of Pinehurst’s Day Packages; we recommend the Golfer’s Hole-in-One after 18 holes on the resort’s scenic fairways. Pinehurst’s award-winning golf courses, sportsman-style lodge and gender-specific spa services like the Gentleman’s Facial make Pinehurst the ultimate men’s vacation. Or bring the kids; there’s plenty for them to do at the onsite playground, mini golf course and Pinehurst Beach Club. We think the separate teen spa makes Pinehurst the ideal destination for a mother-daughter retreat, while the warm décor and ornate fixtures of the luxury vacation villas and condominiums are an ideal lodging choice for families and groups of any size.

Average temperature

Low 31 degrees, high 89 degrees F.

Getting there

From Raleigh-Durham Airport take I-40E to U.S. Rt. 1 and exit onto Midland Road. Proceed on Highway 2 to one of Pinehurst Resort’s three lodging destinations.

Rustic-chic meets quaint Mediterranean village in this spa getaway set in the scenic Smoky Mountains. The most budget-friendly option on our list, Lakeview at Fontana is one spa destination that’s easy on the wallet without sacrificing service or accommodations. How’s that for a guilt-free getaway?

We’ve heard of — and thoroughly enjoyed — our share of gourmet meals, but even we were pleasantly surprised by the exotic ingredients used in Lakeview at Fontana’s gourmet facials. Pomegranate and black cherry extracts, red wine and wasabi form the base of several revitalizing facials and detoxifying body wraps. Treatments at the intimate, six-room spa are complemented by aromatherapy, soothing music and candle light designed to entice all of your senses. Lakeview at Fontana’s Mediterranean-themed village boasts suites that are rustic in theme but luxurious in all other regards, with down comforters, candles and Aveda bath products. Start each day with a European pastry-style breakfast, wind down with an assortment of wine and cheeses in the evening, and make use of the resort’s outdoor pool, hiking trails and yoga studio in between. And no visit would be complete without a mountain bike adventure on the exhilarating Tsali Trail alongside the resort’s namesake, Fontana Lake.

Separate yourself from the ordinary along miles of unspoiled beaches and coastal scenery at the Sanderling, the only true resort and spa on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the resort recaptured our attention with a recent multi-million dollar renovation.

The Sanderling Resort and Spa’s traditional coastal architecture and signature spa treatments are inspired by the unique natural resources of the Currituck Sound. The seashell facial massage is an essential part of any stay, though we found the stimulating seawater soak, warm sea mud wrap and massaging warm water jets of the Sea-renity treatment to be a close second. But the pampering doesn’t end with the spa. Plush upholstered headboards, crisp white sheets and coastal-inspired decor are all features of the resort’s newly renovated accommodations. And don’t forget the panoramic views of coastal dunes offered by the floor-to-ceiling windows that grace each room. Or perhaps we could interest you in a white chocolate raspberry crème brulee at the Swan Bar and the award-winning, French-inspired cuisine of the Left Bank dining room.

Low 35 degrees, high 87 degrees F.

The Sanderling’s Lifesaving Station Restaurant is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
