If the movies made you dream of this experience, it’s a dream come true - only the movies never combined Wyoming horseback riding at a century-old guest ranch with gourmet meals prepared by a le Cordon Bleu-trained chef. Then again, there’s never been a guest ranch like the Hideout Lodge and Resort.
It’s authentic, that’s for sure. The Flitner family has ranched on this Wyoming property - now about 300,000 beautiful acres - for 100 years, and you’ll meet the fifth generation here. But it’s authentic in more ways than one. The family is also well-traveled and familiar with European hospitality. And then there’s the fact that some of them cook. When we say cook, we don’t just mean baked beans and chuck wagon meals. We mean gourmet rib sirloin, crab cakes, elegant wine pairings...dining at its finest, with elegant accommodations to match. Naturally, you can go horseback riding here. The horses are naturally broken and trained, and the routes you travel are purposely spread across the landscape so it’s not ever a caravan-style experience. Instead, it’s an adventure where you’re likely to learn a lot about the Wyoming scenery even as you take it all in.

Let’s put horseback riding aside for just a moment. Instead, let’s focus on the idea of a luxury wilderness family vacation. Of course, it still has plenty of horseback riding, but at Brooks Lake Lodge you’ll find surprising features and amenities for the entire family.
That means a full-service spa, a covered outdoor Jacuzzi, spectacular food at all three meals and lodge rooms and cabins that combine extreme comfort - goose down comforters and wood burning stoves come to mind - with the lodge’s historic landmark-designated past that dates to 1922. It also means a children’s program featuring a coordinator who conducts educational trail walks, arts and crafts, canoe trips and more, plus movies and campfires in the evenings. So anyway - back to the horseback riding. For kids and adults, it’s the thrill of a lifetime exploring dozens of scenic trails under the helpful guidance of experienced wranglers. You can also go on canoe and horse pack trips, fly fishing, snowmobile tours, and even dogsledding. Now that’s a Wyoming family vacation.
From Jackson Hole, proceed north on Rt. 191/26/89; at Moran, turn east on Rt. 26/287. From Dubois, Lander or Riverton, follow Rt. 26/287 west. From both east and west there is a USFS Recreational Area sign for Brooks Lake. There you will turn onto Brooks Lake Road. The lodge is five miles away.
Construction on Brooks Lake Lodge began in April 1922. It was completed in July 1922, which at the time was a record for speed in construction.
The first thing you notice about Trapper Creek Lodge is...well, the lodge. It’s not the exact same building that once served as a hangout for Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway, but it might as well be. You’re not likely to find a log lodge as grand or as inviting in this entire area of Wyoming.
This grandeur comes with a terrific perk: fine dining. The menu here is full of dishes that transform fresh, local ingredients into gourmet Western delicacies. It’s available on a large scale, too; Trapper Creek Lodge caters Wyoming weddings, conferences, reunions and group events. There are also three intimate, comfortable guest rooms in the lodge, with distinctly modern features like private baths and flat screen TVs. Or, for an experience that literally takes you back through time, stay in either the cottage or the guest house - both equally modern and comfortable and both overlooking the ruins of the original Wyoming lodge dating back to the late 1800s.
