You’ll want to cut the cheese over and over again to get another slice of the international award-winning blue cheese produced locally at Central Point’s own Rogue Creamery. This artisan cheese operation is a must-see, must-taste stop on your Southern Oregon getaway.
They say that milk does a body good. And in 1935 when the creamery’s creator, Italian-born Thomas Vella, got together with J.L. Kraft (the legendary cheese mogul) to discuss the soon-to-be demands for milk when WWII broke out, Vella produced enough cheese to do hundreds of thousands of bodies good for the war effort. Five million pounds of cheese a year, to be exact. With a lofty history like that, it’s no wonder the creamery went on to produce the first Oregon Blue Vein, a bleu cheese considered one of the best in the world.
More recently, the creamery won the London World Cheese Award for best bleu cheese in 2003, the highest honor an American cheese factory has ever won. When you visit the creamery, you can watch a presentation about its history, as well as watch how cheddar is made in the conjoining room. And cheese tastings are always available!
