For more than a century, a bright beam of light cut through the Michigan sky and guided ships away from the course edges of the Leelanau Peninsula. That beam came from the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Inactive since 1972, it is now a museum on the National and State Register of Historic Places.
The Grand Traverse Lighthouse and Museum is located in the forested acreage of Leelanau State Park. Here, you can learn about the nautical history of this original U.S. Lighthouse Service building and once two-family dwelling. Stop by the museum store and treat yourself to some tasty pastries or sandwiches and cup of joe before taking the climb up in the lighthouse tower. The keeper’s residence has been restored and is decorated with vintage furniture and items from the 1920s and 1930s, making your visit feel like a step back in time.
The Grand Traverse Light, Archaeological Dig and Great Lakes Shipping self-guided exhibits present the northern Michigan landmark throughout the decades and the South Fox Island Restoration describes the museum’s current endeavor to support the preservation and restoration of the neighboring lighthouse. Free educational programs are held during June and July. A Lighthouse Treasure Hunt is also offered.
