Listen to the far-off hoots of a great horned owl, watch a red fox dashing through the dunes and feel the cool, crisp Lake Michigan air wash over your face when you visit the Kohler-Andrea State Park. It’s a haven not only for endangered species, but for families looking for a true natural getaway.
The 1,000-acre wildlife refuge is an ecological cocktail - pine and hardwood forests, dense river marshes, expansive beaches and rolling sand dunes. Visit the park for a day trip or stay overnight at the 105-unit Family Campground. It includes 49 sites with electrical hookups, campfire rings and picnic tables. You can even rent a canvas and pole teepee to get a feel for how the Early Woodland and Hopewell Indians lived on the same land many centuries ago.
The Sanderling Nature Center, open May through October, is on the northern side of the park and houses an auditorium used for programs, movies and speakers. There are displays of some of the 400 plant species known in the park as well as of the 150 bird species that live in or migrate through the Kohler-Andrae area. Self-guided hiking, biking and horse trails also wind throughout the park.
