If your boots were made for walking, then lace ‘em up and explore the rich culture and picturesque terrain of Sheboygan on one of five historic walking trails. The loops meander throughout the plentiful parks and communities created by the 19th-century Croatian, Dutch, Irish and German immigrants.
The most ecologically diverse – and longest – trail is the 12-mile North Loop Trail. It passes through historic Maywood Park, and into old and new neighborhoods speckled with churches and cemeteries. Deland Park is home to the lonely remains of Lottie Cooper – the furniture schooner that sunk in 1894 and was excavated exactly 100 years later. On the horizon you’ll see Sheboygan River, Pigeon River and Lake Michigan.
A walk along the North Historic District Trail leads you through the oldest section of the city, Village of Sheboygan, with a population of only 36 people. South Lakeside Trail is a shorter version of the South Loop Trail. It begins and ends at the mouth of the Sheboygan River and passes by the cliff where, in the1890s, Buffalo Bill hosted several of his Wild West nighttime shows. The shortest trail, the Sheboygan Downtown Trail, allows you to observe stunning architecture spanning three centuries.
