There is perhaps no better fusion of Tucson’s past and future than the Historic Hotel Congress. It’s historic for its clientele - John Dillinger’s gang stayed here in 1934 - and its glittering nightclub, Club Congress, houses some of the nation’s most progressive bands and other performance artists.
Just like it was in 1919 when the Hotel Congress opened, there are no televisions in any of the renovated rooms; the phones, the beds and the radios are all retro, like the original 1930s switchboard you can see downstairs. Unlike how it was, all 40 of the second-floor rooms have private baths and high-speed wireless Internet. It’s a simple charm that is every bit as powerful as the vibe from the nightclub downstairs, where you’re likely to see acts such as Reverend Horton Heat, Asylum Street Spankers and AK1200.
You are not alone here, either…Vince, T.S. and several other souls from the past have been known to appear now and then in these halls and in the Tap Room, a popular “watering hole” since the first day of the Hotel Congress’ operation. The entire experience is rich past, richer present and entirely Tucson.
