Town Creek Indian Mound gives you a glimpse of American history before the influence of English settlers. You’ll learn about the lives of Native Americans through ancient artifacts and buildings. Today Town Creek is North Carolina’s only landmark that preserves Indian culture.
Excavation of the Town Creek Indian Mound began in 1937 and workers are still finding clues into their culture today. Archeologists named this sophisticated Indian culture the “Pee Dee.” They established political leaders, manufactured and traded goods and developed their own religion. One amazing discovery was a rectangular lodge designed for large meetings and traditional ceremonies.
The key structures of this historic site have been rebuilt for you to experience the living conditions of the Pee Dee during the 11th century. Town Creek is one of the most popular historic sites in North Carolina offering you informational tours, astronomy education, festivals and more.
