You’ll be amazed at the beautiful Greek architecture and stunning design of North Carolina’s state capitol building. You’ll enjoy the interesting story why Raleigh became the capital, and why it took so long to choose. The capitol building is a must see on your historical Heartland vacation.
During the birth of our nation North Carolina lacked a state capital. After several attempted destinations they decided on Raleigh. The cross-shaped building adorns a domed rotunda and towering carved pillars. Today the capitol remains almost the same from its grand opening in 1840. The original cabinetry glows with colonial craftsmanship and the building is preserved by the state as a historical shrine.
Your tour begins in the rotunda while you marvel at the statue of George Washington depicted as a Roman officer. You’ll venture upstairs to the House of Representatives Chamber; this mighty room holds 120 members and is lit by an 84-candle chandelier. The third and final floor takes you to the State Library built in 1842. You’ll enjoy the ornamental bookshelves and multiple spiral staircases that accompany its Gothic design.
