In-between Raleigh and Greensboro sits the Bennett farmhouse, the location of the largest troop surrender during the Civil War. Confederate General Johnston and Union General Sherman met near the Durham Station at a simple farmhouse to negotiate surrender. The Bennett family graciously allowed the generals to discuss their business and after three meetings they came to a decision. General Johnston would surrender his armies and his troops would report to Greensboro for pardons. This ended the Civil War in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.
Today Bennett Place takes you back in time with historical reenactments and education of colonial lifestyles. Interpreters discuss the history and significance of the Civil War and give you a look into the life of a soldier. They even encourage you to participate!
