Quebec is celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2008, featuring the oldest city fortifications extant above the Mexican border. No wonder it was been labeled a world heritage site by UNESCO (the United Nations). This was the site of a fortified outpost built by Jacques Cartier in 1535!
For a truly historic, European feel, Quebec City has some truly breathtaking sights. The masterpiece hotel, Chateau Frontenac, is a French-style mammoth inundated with artistry in Old Quebec that stabs the sky, dominating the cityscape when you walk from downtown through the Saint Louis gates. The oldest military and ornate architecture is situated here and includes the 1608 ramparts, but you also must see the aged city center of Place Royale and Batterie Royale. Lower Town also offers fabulously unique boutiques for out-of-this-world shopping.
To help ring in this appreciation of the past as well as present, the Winter Carnival in Quebec is the largest held on Earth, spanning 17 days and alluring nearly one million people starting in late January or sometimes early February. There is extensive live entertainment in the form of music, the outdoor Loto-Quebec dance party, canoe and dogsled races and unique cuisine at every turn!
