Okay, we cheated a little - part of this designated New York State Byway actually runs through parts of Vermont and Canada, too. But the Lakes to Locks Passage has been designated by the Federal Highway Administration as an "All American Road," an exhilarating mix of recreation and history.
This passage, accessible by car, foot, boat or bicycle, runs between New York's Mohawk River and the St. Lawrence in Quebec. It’s part pre-Colonial history, with actual French and British forts - such as Fort Ticonderoga, Crown Point and Fort Defiance - built during the Seven Years’ War. It’s also a great place for bicyclers; parts of it intersect with the 350-mile Champlain Trail Bikeways, known as some of the most scenic in the country.
Of course, even if you go by yourself, you’re never really alone on the byway. All along the way you’ll encounter any of 27 Waypoint communities, showing off their French, Dutch and English heritages and architecture. There are plenty of interpretive exhibits that show you the true depth of what you’re seeing, and, for good measure, an endless supply of Adirondacks outdoor fun.
