Most people know Lake Placid as the site where where the U.S. Hockey Team famously defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics. But in 1932, the renowned figure skater Sonja Henie won her second Olympic gold medal at this complex; an onsite museum commemorates both events.
Today the Olympic Center offers four skating rinks that operate all year. The towering Olympic Ski Jumps are an impressive sight; and the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg features luge, bobsled, cross country skiing, biathlon and more.
Here’s the best part: you can participate in any of these events. The four ice rinks are not just for speed skating, hockey and figure skating; evening skates are available for the public, complete with skate rentals. Ride with a professional driver and brakeman - or by yourself - down the twisting luge or bobsled course. Take a lesson to be a biathlete. Cross country ski or showshoe on groomed trails. Gondola rides, facility tours…the fun never ends!
