Sometimes a place is best illustrated not by what’s in it, but what’s under it. That’s the case with Port Henry, which rests above tons of high-grade iron ore. In fact it was the largest pre-war producer of iron ore in the country, helping with the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
For railroad and mining history buffs and those looking to get a better sense of this part of the Adirondacks, it’s pure gold. At the waterfront complex that was once the mining headquarters of Witherbee, Sherman & Co., you’ll find a nicely restored carriage house with displays that document the mining processes and the lives of the mine workers.
Highlights of this museum include the Company's main office building, built in 1875 in the grand French Second Empire-style, and the Cedar Point Blast Furnace and Foundry, which is now part of the marina. And the remains of a steel trestle, built in 1929 and used for loading ore, can be seen along the waterfront. And in Witherbee Park, you can walk through an original locomotive, ore car, and caboose.
