This was the “Gilded Age” - wealthy, post-Civil War businessmen began building large mansions that reflected both the desire for opulence and the necessity of working with local materials. And Great Camp Sagamore is one of the most stunning and well-preserved of the original Great Camps.
This was a time when logs, native stone and even branches and twigs were transformed into a new architectural style, and the trend was to create separate buildings for separate purposes. The Great Camps were really compounds, and Great Camp Sagamore is no exception: it features 27 buildings. The main lodge was built in 1897 by W.W. Durant, considered the founder of the Adirondack Great Camp style; later the famous Vanderbilt family added a dining hall, croquet lawn, guest housing and a semi-outdoor bowling alley. It has hosted such notables as Gary Cooper, General George C. Marshall and Hoagy Carmichael
Today, Great Camp Sagamore is one of the very few National Historic Landmarks that is still used for its original purpose. It is owned by the Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks, Inc., and you can tour the property from late May through mid-October.
