If you’ve read “The Last of the Mohicans,” you may have some idea of the significance of Fort William Henry in the history of New York and the U.S. From its small hilltop, it was a key fort in the deciding years of the Seven Years War fought between the French and the British between 1754 and 1763.
The fort walls you see today are actually a reconstruction, as the original Fort William Henry was burned by the French in 1757. But the dungeons, wells and the original foundations that remained are still here on the south end of Lake George. And the grounds - which still contain the remains of soldiers on both sides of the conflict - have surrendered priceless archaeological artifacts that remain on display.
You can take a guided tour of the present-day Fort William Henry every hour, excellent for all family members. Additional tours are available for educational groups. The Fort William Henry Museum also conducts evening Family Fun Ghost Tours, including both the fort and Lake George.
